Gatherings & Events

Join us in nurturing a spirit of shared civic purpose.
July 2019 Civic Saturday at Central Library

All of Spirit & Place’s events and gatherings are rooted in the transformative power of arts, humanities, and religion to foster connection, dialogue, and civic engagement.

Highlights include Big Tent Talks which launched in 2024 and presents notable and inspirational speakers focused on faith and spirituality.

Past offerings have also included Civic Saturdays which are spirited, ritual‑inspired gatherings originally designed by Citizen University. As a “civic analogue” to a faith gathering, these events bring friends and strangers together to share poetry, music, readings of resonant civic texts, and a reflective civic sermon, all woven with intentional conversation and joyful participation. Spirit & Place’s Erin Kelley was part of the inaugural cohort of Civic Saturday trainees and you can check out past Civic Saturdays (including Erin’s “civic sermons”) below.

Although Civic Saturdays are not currently being scheduled, Erin has adapted the format and will serve as a featured presenter for Indiana Humanities’ “Civics and Democracy Speakers Bureau” in 2026, as part of their America250 initiative.
