SUMMARY:Nourishing Words: Feeding the Whole with Poetry and Prose
DESCRIPTION:ASL Upon Request. \nExperience the poetry and prose of New York Times bestselling author Cole Arthur Riley alongside young\, local BIPOC poets and storytellers as they not only consider but deliver the nourishing power of words. \nFeaturing bestselling author of This Here Flesh: Spirituality\, Liberation\, and the Stories that Make Us\, Cole Arthur Riley\, and other local talent\, this event considers and demonstrates both the power of words to nourish us\, to feed us\, and to empower us to the best\, next step in our own lives. In a time when words are used to harm\, this event invites you into a deep consideration of the power of words to both nourish us and leave us starved. The speakers gathered will remind those gathered of the power they have at hand with tools no more complex than the words they speak and write. \nThis gathering will also include an interactive element where performers and attendees will have the opportunity to participate in the creation of an original book at the event. This book will be bound as an original\, scanned to be printed in a short run\, and presented online. \nQuestions? Contact 317-683-0829 or thechurchwithin@thechurchwithin.org. \nEvent Partners: The Church Within\, The Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis\, The Philippine Cultural Community Center\, and The Kneeland Center for Poetry\, Inc. with support from Ujamaa Community Bookstore. \nEvent Registration: Registration requested by November 5. Walk-ins welcome until capacity is reached.

SUMMARY:Outside the Boxes: Challenging Labels Attached to Justice-Involved Individuals
DESCRIPTION:Discover how being a part of the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program challenged participants to re-think their ideas of “identity” and the need to challenge the use of labels that often divide us. \nHow we each identify\, and how we are identified by others\, are often not the same. The practice of bringing together incarcerated (inside) and non-incarcerated (outside) people together for engaged and informed dialogue allows for a transformative learning experience that challenges people to re-think their use of labels\, such as “offenders\,” “addicts\,” “felons” — language that dismisses and demeans people who have been entangled in the criminal justice system. \nIn this session\, people who have been formerly incarcerated\, people overcoming addiction\, and college students who have all participated together in Inside-Out courses together will share their experiences and lead session participants to question the ways society uses labels to define and constrict people’s opportunities and futures. \nA partnership between the Indiana Chapter of the Inside-Out Prison Exchange\, PACE Indy\, and Dove Recovery House for Women. \nContact the event organizers at 317-274-2462 or suhyatt@iupui.edu. \nWalk-ins welcome\, but registration strongly encouraged by Nov. 4. \nRegister below.
