SUMMARY:FACING GRIEF: Nourishing Ourselves and Others Through Loss
DESCRIPTION:The Nov. 5 performance at 4pm will have live captioning to a screen.\nThe Nov. 7 performance at 7pm will has ASL interpretation.\nAll other accommodation requests should be made by Oct. 20. \nMany of us don’t know what to say or do when a loved one experiences profound grief. Through live theatrical enactments and original music\, audiences are invited to practice reacting to loss and supporting those they love. \nOur brains are wired for survival\, not loss\, creating significant challenges in the aftermath of profound grief. FACING GRIEF\, a presentation of The Sapphire Theatre’s award-winning PICTURE THIS® applied theatre programming\, engages improvisational actors to act out brief scenarios. Staying in character\, they “break the fourth wall” for an interactive talk back with the audience at the crisis point of each scene. Musicians\, interfaith ministers\, educators\, counselors and other subject matter experts will help facilitate this event. \nFACING GRIEF will also be performed twice on November 5 at Unity Indianapolis. The 11:30am performance will follow a specially-themed worship service (10am) that all are welcome to attend! A second performance is scheduled for 4pm. SUMMARY:HIV Modernization: Ending the Stigma of People Living with HIV
DESCRIPTION:Through an art exhibit and panel discussion\, learn how people living with HIV and their allies are working to end HIV stigma by modernizing Indiana’s outdated HIV criminal laws. \nPeople living with HIV often face stigma and discrimination related to Indiana laws that criminalize them due to their positive HIV status. This event features speakers living with HIV who are working to end HIV criminalization through legislative change\, activism\, art\, and community support. \nA visual art show featuring Indy-based artist Contonnia Turner\, Jr. and photographer/digital artist Todd Fuqua will provide a backdrop for the discussion. Contonnia Turner\, Jr. is a talented young Black Hoosier with multiple layers of intersecting identity who creates artwork that reflects who he is physically\, mentally\, and spiritually. Todd Fuqua is an Indianapolis-based artivist (activism through art) who started a social movement called CelebrateUU\, building on the concept of HIV Undetectable=Untransmittable (U=U). \nExplore the exhibit and interact informally with artists beginning at 5:30. The Talk will begin at 6:15 moderated by Terrell Parker and will include HIV Modernization Movement Chair Dr. Carrie Foote\, and Co-Chair Mark Anthony Hughes. The Phoenix bar will be open\, and snacks will be provided. \nA partnership between Phoenix Theatre Cultural Center and HIV Modernization Movement Indiana. \nContact the event organizers at 317-635-7529 or cmacy@phoenixtheatre.org. \nWalk-ins welcome\, but registration is strongly encouraged by Nov. 9.  \nRegister below. \nEXHIBIT DATES: Nov. 3-13. \n

SUMMARY:Tearing Down Boxes and Embracing Change
DESCRIPTION:Fiber artists from two guilds unite to create an art exhibit that breaks us out of our boxes and embraces change!  Learn more in a Trail Talk session with fiber artists and actors who have portrayed artists dealing with change\, as they discuss art as a vehicle for healing and growth. \nTo broaden ourselves we often need to break out of our boxes – religion affiliations\, circle of friends\, social groups\, etc. Doing so means making an intentional choice to enter uncomfortable or challenging spaces to affect or experience change. Artists from INFiber and Akomo Ntoso have partnered across guilds to share ideas and expose each other to new points of view\, techniques\, and ways of doing. Their work will be displayed for the public to interpret and during a Trail Talk session at the Phoenix Theater\, fiber artists and actors with the production Alabaster will join in conversation to discuss art as a tool for healing\, growth\, and change. \nDoors open at 5:30pm to view the exhibit with a panel discussion occurring from 6:30-8pm. \nVisit the exhibit from Nov. 4 through Dec. 23 (Tues. – Fri.\, 1-4pm) at the Phoenix Theatre Cultural Center. \nA partnership between INFiber\, Akoma Ntoso Modern Quilt Guild of Central Indiana\, and Phoenix Theatre Cultural Center. \nQuestions? Contact 317-690-3851 or acoconnell@comcast.net. \nThis event is currently scheduled to occur in-person. Register for the Trail Talk session by Nov. 4 and note this event will adhere to prevailing local guidance on COVID-19. Thoroughly read confirmation details sent by the host. \nImage Credit: Montika Allen-Atkinson \n \nThis event is part of the Spirit & Place Festival.
