SUMMARY:Spirit & Place Common Read: Here For It\, or\, How to Save Your Soul in America by R. Eric Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Join with Spirit & Place on an exploration of the festival’s GRATITUDE theme through a series of book discussions. \nOur next gathering will occur IN PERSON on Tuesday\, August 13 from 6 – 7PM at the College Ave. Library (4180 N. College Ave.). We will discuss Here For It\, or\, How to Save Your Soul in America by R. Eric Thomas. \nThis is a book club-style discussion\, not an author appearance.  \nBOOK SUMMARY:\nR. Eric Thomas didn’t know he was different until the world told him so. Everywhere he went–whether it was his rich\, mostly white\, suburban high school\, his conservative black church\, or his Ivy League college in a big city–he found himself on the outside looking in. \nIn essays by turns hysterical and heartfelt\, Eric redefines what it means to be an “other” through the lens of his own life experience. He explores the two worlds of his childhood: the barren urban landscape where his parents’ house was an anomalous bright spot\, and the verdant school they sent him to in white suburbia. He writes about struggling to reconcile his Christian identity with his sexuality\, about the exhaustion of code-switching in college\, accidentally getting famous on the internet (for the wrong reason)\, and the surreal experience of covering the 2016 election as well as the seismic change that came thereafter. Ultimately\, Eric seeks the answer to the ever more relevant question: Is the future worth it? Why do we bother when everything seems to be getting worse? As the world continues to shift in unpredictable ways\, Eric finds the answers to these questions by re-envisioning what “normal” means\, and in the powerful alchemy that occurs when you at last place yourself at the center of your own story. \nWHERE TO FIND:\nIndianapolis Public Library (eBook\, Book\, & Audio) \nLocal Books Stores! Call and see what is in stock.  \nAmazon (Used\, New\, & Kindle from $8-$19) \nREGISTER HERE or use the blue button/weblink below.

SUMMARY:Civic Saturday: The Reflective Citizen
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be a reflective citizen? A person who knows the value of showing up for others and who does so in a spirit of open-mindedness\, responsibility\, and whole-heartedness? We’ll explore these habits of citizenship while building community by sharing poetry\, songs\, and civic fellowship together. \nCivic Saturday is a civic analogue to a faith gathering. It’s a gathering of friends and strangers in a common place to nurture a spirit of shared purpose. But it’s not about a particular faith tradition nor is it trying to replace faith. It’s about the shared societal values that should work to unite us — liberty\, equality\, freedom\, and self-government — even if we argue how to achieve these ideals! \nJoin with others to sing\, hear poetry\, share civic readings\, listen to a civic sermon about being a “Reflective Citizen”\, while also building community connections through small group dialogue. \nABOUT CIVIC SATURDAYS: The Civic Saturday model was pioneered by Seattle-based Citizen University in 2016 and strives to be a “great democratic self-cure.” In a time of deep political divide\, we must create new approaches to fostering a shared sense of moral and civic purpose. In a country held together not by race or religion\, but by a common creed\, how do we maintain a sense of national cohesion? How do we create values-based fellowship? How do we convert that creed and those values into useful action? Civic Saturday seeks to answer these questions\, and many more.

SUMMARY:Civic Circle: Religious Pluralism (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Spirit & Place’s Civic Circle gatherings invite you to reflect on our democracy and grapple with what it means to live by America’s civic values. This April we will continue discussing the idea of religious pluralism.  \nWhether you are a person of faith or not\, well\, the Constitution protects it all! So what does “religious pluralism” mean in terms of a shared civic or societal value? How is it different than religious liberty and how do we live into the work of nurturing a religiously pluralistic society? \nUsing the civic reflection dialogue method\, this participatory gathering – you’ll be doing most of the talking! – aims to help you unpack your civic values with others who also care about their role as citizens\, that is\, as those who show up for each other in public life. This gathering is a continuation of our March meeting\, but we will use a different source material and participants need not have attended in April to get something out of this session.  \nPlease use the blue registration button below. \n*ABOUT CIVIC REFLECTION\nEngaging in a civic reflection dialogue is not the same at attending a lecture or discussing a book. This is an immersive experience around a shared source materials (e.g.\, a poem\, short writing\, visual image\, etc.). As such\, we’ll spend most of the time in small group dialogue. Active participation is a must!
