SUMMARY:The Nature of Belief: How Translation of Sacred Text Decides Meaning
DESCRIPTION:Translation is never neutral\, and it shapes more than words. In fact\, it shapes the very nature of belief. Compare different English translations of sacred texts in small groups and how they have influenced understanding and belief across time\, cultures\, and communities. Participants will be challenged to rethink the meaning of well-known verses and how different meanings can reconstruct our thoughts. \nThrough small-group conversations\, participants will explore how translations of sacred texts shape meaning and influence cultural understanding. Beginning with a brief introduction and examples of shifting translations over time\, the event invites guests to compare different versions of ancient writings used across faith communities. By treating sacred texts as both poetry and philosophy\, participants will consider how language\, art\, and interpretation influence belief\, and how translation itself shapes the very nature of religious understanding. \nQuestions? Contact 317-531-6299 or gkelley@bez613.org. \nEvent Organizers: A partnership between Congregation Beth-El Zedeck\, Northminster Presbyterian Church\, and JCC Indianapolis’s Ann Katz Festival of Books. \nRegistration: Click here to register. \n  \n

SUMMARY:A Blessing\, not a Burden with Alex Kor and Graham Honaker
DESCRIPTION:ASL provided by students in IUI’s Program in American Sign Language (ASL) and English Interpreting \nBy all accounts\, Dr. Alex Kor’s life has been a miracle. The son of two Holocaust survivors\, including the Mengel twin Eva Kor\, Alex will discuss his book A Blessing\, Not a Burden. Co-author Graham Honaker and Troy Fears of CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center join the discussion. \nEva Kor\, Alex Kor’s mother\, was known for her controversial choice to forgive the Nazis. She did not forgive them on behalf of anyone but herself\, and her choice to forgive was a way of giving herself peace and freedom from anger. During this event\, Alex Kor will explore what it was like being raised by two Holocaust survivors who also experienced immigration to the United States\, continued antisemitism\, and post-traumatic stress. Through it all\, Alex has retained a deep sense of gratitude for his upbringing and life’s journey. \nQuestions?: Contact 317-715-9240 or carnett@jccindy.org. \nEvent Organizers: A partnership between JCC Indianapolis\, CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center\, and Hooverwood Living. \nRegistration: Registration is encouraged. SUMMARY:Blue Like Me: Identity Exploration with Siona Benjamin and Rabbi Sandy Sasso
DESCRIPTION:Through performance art\, conversation\, and Q&A\, attendees will explore sacred stories of identity\, challenge\, and transformation during this creative and thought-provoking event featuring Indian Jewish artist Siona Benjamin and Rabbi Sandy Sasso.  \nCentering the sacred storytelling of the midrash\, Siona Benjamin – a trans-cultural Jewish artist who grew up in Hindu and Muslim societies while educated in Catholic and Zoroastrian schools – will\, along with Rabbi Sasso and dancers from Phoenix rising\, explore how sacred narratives link one’s identity to larger communal traditions and understanding. \nThe speakers and performers at this event have each had to create their own narratives to break down barriers in order to reach their high levels of achievement. Together\, they will examine the sacred responsibility of holy storytelling and will teach the audience how they can create sacred stories for themselves. \nA partnership between JCC Indianapolis\, Congregation Beth-El Zedeck\, and Center for Interfaith Cooperation.
