SUMMARY:Powerful Conversations on Race (Nov.)
DESCRIPTION:Powerful Conversations on Race (PCR) is a monthly community dialogue series — with two tracks — exploring topics around race\, racism\, and the resulting impact. These sessions provide a means of getting comfortable talking about uncomfortable topics are are rooted in humanities- and art-based materials and sources. \nThis IS NOT a lecture or book club\, but rather a space for community to come together and dive deeply into a variety of topics concerning race. Active participation is expected. \nPCR 101 sessions are great starting place for those new to these kinds of dialogues and/or those wishing to more fully understand America’s complex racial history. Race & . . . sessions explore more contemporary issues are are designed for those who wish to continue past PCR 101. \nLearn more on the Powerful Conversations on Race main page. \nNovember’s sessions will focus on: \n\nPCR 101: Race\, Holidays\, and Dinner Discussions\nRace & . . .  Religion & White Supremacy (Inspired by this year’s Spirit & Place Festival Public Conversation with Robert Jones.)\n\n*For now\, PCR sessions are being conducted via Zoom. A camera check-in will be requested when you enter the space and since we share our computer screen to show images and text\, it is best to login from a laptop or tablet rather than a smartphone. Registration is managed through Eventbrite and the link is below. \nSpecial thanks to our partners Asante Art Institute of Indianapolis\, Community Action of Greater Indianapolis\, Indiana Humanities\, IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI\, Medical Humanities & Health Program @ IUPUI\, National Endowment of the Humanities\, Nicholas H. Noyes\, Jr.\, Memorial Foundation St. Paul’s Episcopal Church\, The Indianapolis Foundation\, a CICF affiliate and of course our community-based dialogue facilitators!

SUMMARY:Leave Them Something
DESCRIPTION:Explore the potential effects of climate chaos on our children’s future through writing\, dance\, and music inspired by the evocative artwork of Edith Vonnegut\, Kurt Vonnegut’s daughter. \nIf chaos is fast and uncontrollable change\, then how much longer do we have before “climate change” becomes “climate chaos?” This event combines the visual arts with literature\, music\, and dance to challenge the audience to think about what climate chaos will mean to future generations. \nA multi-layered interpretive event\, writers from the Indiana Writers Center will share original pieces inspired by Edith Vonnegut’s art. DK dancers will then share their choreographed responses to these writings for a deeply creative and immersive virtual gathering aimed at opening hearts and minds to the personal responsibilities we have in addressing climate change. \nA partnership between JCC Indianapolis\, Dance Kaleidoscope\, Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library\, and Indiana Writers Center. \nQuestions? Contact 317-432-3619 or lrothenberg@jccindy.org. \nThis event has changed from a hybrid to a virtual event. SUMMARY:Eternity 123
DESCRIPTION:Change is a central element to the avant-garde Japanese dance form of Butoh and dancer Vangeline presents original work that asks audiences to see Butoh as a way to transmute the pain and discord of societal shifts into art \nButoh is an avant-garde art form born during the height of the Japanese Counterculture Movement of the 1950s. Influenced by surrealism\, neo dada\, ballet\, and other dance forms\, Butoh “represents a shift from the conscious to the subconscious\, and each movement\, even when choreographed\, comes from within ….” \nThe Indianapolis Movement Arts Collective and Big Car eagerly invite the Indianapolis community to experience what might be an unfamiliar dance form that\, at its very core\, is about change. Butoh dancers morph into otherness\, their bodies taking on qualities of the natural world\, mythopoetic characters\, or surreal imagery. Butoh reveals “darkness” (that which is subconscious) as a transformative agent that is essential to growth and healing. \nA partnership between Indianapolis Movement Arts Collective and Big Car Collaborative. \nQuestions? Contact 317-603-9330 or admin@indymovementarts.org. \nThese will be live\, in-person performances. Register by Nov. 12 & 13\, respectively. Please note this event will adhere to prevailing local guidance on COVID-19.
