SUMMARY:Legislating Students' Identities: Stopping Attacks on Students' Identities in School
DESCRIPTION:Hear from students themselves on the ways in which their identities are being policed in schools\, specifically related to race\, sexual orientation\, and gender. \nStudents have been the target of state legislatures across the country\, including Indiana\, in recent years. From bans on trans athletes and classroom censorship bills to dress codes that disproportionally affected students of color\, student rights to be who they are seem constantly under attack. SUMMARY:CANCELLED Reviving a Forgotten Freetown: Mobilizing Family History to Protect Communities
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED. WE ARE SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE. \nDuring this half-day workshop\, we will explore how the small African American community of Norwood was able to mobilize their family history to protect their community from unwelcome change. This hands-on program will allow us to help participants organize their family stories into community histories using newly developed “archival kits.” Intergenerational (12+) but younger children welcome. \nLearn about the history of the Norwood\, a neighborhood on the southeast side of Indianapolis\, founded in the 1860s with the arrival of soldiers who had served in the 28th U.S. Colored Troops during the American Civil War. Ongoing historical research and the creation of community archives are helping preserve this unique cultural asset and this workshop aims to help participants gain the skills in preserving their own family and community histories. \nThe workshop will consist of a history lesson on Norwood followed by hands-on activities in which participants will discover the best methods for building their own archives to tell their own stories on their own terms using newly developed take-home archival kits. By creating new histories that allow historically marginalized communities to be centered\, the workshop aims to uplift people by creating a space where they can define themselves and feel the embodied sense of pride and community that this recognition gives. \nDesigned as an intergenerational gathering\, this event is great for elders\, parents\, and youth age 12+. But if you have younger children\, please bring them with you! WE will have adapted materials available for them to explore. Attend one or both gatherings. \nJoin Sea Scope’s youth Eco-Warriors for a two-part event exploring environmental justice\, community dialogue\, and a Fall Creek cleanup. Facilitated by local experts and inspired by Laudato Si\, this experience blends spiritual reflection and action. Connect with neighbors of Martindale-Brightwood and our living earth—come for one or both days! \nThis two-part experience (attending both Saturdays is optional) connects storytelling\, faith\, Martindale-Brightwood neighbors\, and environmental action. The first session features an expert and youth-led community forum exploring local ecological challenges and reflections inspired by Laudato Si’ – a 2015 papal encyclical focused on environmental stewardship\, climate change\, and ecological responsibility\, emphasizing the moral and spiritual dimensions of caring for the Earth. A week later\, participants engage in a hands-on cleanup along Fall Creek restoring natural spaces in disinvested communities while learning how local actions connect to global environmental issues. Through dialogue\, reflection\, and collective action\, attendees will deepen their understanding of stewardship\, equity\, and the sacred responsibility to care for our shared planet. \nQuestions?
