SUMMARY:(Un)Comfortable Conversations: Telling Our Stories\, Transforming Our World
DESCRIPTION:Change – personal and societal – has the power to bring us together and divide us. Hear from spoken word artists\, writers\, and community leaders on what it means to wrestle with and accept the consequences of change. \nNew and profound communal bonds are often formed as we grow into an embrace our true identities. Yet this process of change and self-acceptance can often break older bonds and challenge tradition. Reflect on the words of spoken word artists whose religious\, racial\, sexual\, and gender identities have created new bonds and broken others. In what ways has personal change strengthened their sense of identity and community while disrupting tradition? Are some of these divides worth bridging? Or letting go? What new community values are revealed as we embrace change and how might art uplift stories of positive change? \nA partnership between Ivy Tech Community College Library—Indianapolis and Word as Bond\, Inc. \nQuestions? Contact 440-384-7612 and amackjackson@wordasbond.org. \nThis event be conducted via Zoom. Register by Nov. 8. \nPhoto Credit: Word as Bond\, Inc. \n \nThis event is part of the Spirit & Place Festival. SUMMARY:Oracles of Change: Interfaith Understanding through Art & Poetry
DESCRIPTION:WATCH A RECORDING OF THE EVENT BY CLICKING HERE. \nHear poems from Sikh and Muslim artists and reflect on how poetic imagery can be a meaningful tool in helping us make sense of societal change. \nIn 2020\, Franklin College hosted its first Interfaith Understanding through the Arts event during the Spirit & Place Festival. This year’s offering invites poets Sadiyah Bashir and Preeti Kaur Rajpal to share their work via livestream as a way to contemplate community change – even when that change results in violence and prejudice. Particularly considering the tragic FedEx shooting\, this event seeks to provide community members a way to engage and celebrate the growing diversity of Central Indiana through poetry as well as moderated conversations between readings. During these small group conversations\, audience members will be asked to think about how art and faith can help heal communities. \nA partnership between Franklin College\, Center for Interfaith Cooperation\, Johnson County Public Library\, Creative Council of Franklin\, Wild Geese Bookshop\, and SikhsPAC. \nQuestions? Contact 317-738-8140 or hadamsingram@franklincollege.edu. \nThis event is currently scheduled to occur in-person and online. Register by Nov. 11 to select your attendance option. For in-person attendees\, this event will adhere to prevailing local guidance on COVID-19. Thoroughly read confirmation details sent by the host. \nImage Credit: Preeti Kaur Rajpal \n \nThis event is part of the Spirit & Place Festival.
