SUMMARY:The Sisters Are Alright Weekend: A Celebration of the Black Femme Experience - "Dear Black Girl"
DESCRIPTION:Through live letter readings and community discussion\, The Sisters Are Alright Weekend: A Celebration of the Black Femme Experience amplifies how Black women identify their true selves separate from poisoned narrative. Two gatherings\, two venues\, one awesome time! ($10 per person/per show.) \nFor centuries\, Black American women have been forced to reckon with negative stereotypes rooted in misogynoir. The indefatigable Mammy; the aggressive Sapphire; the wanton Jezebel; and thoughtlessly procreating Matriarch influence how Black women are seen by society and how they see themselves\, disconnecting them from authenticity. Activist Audre Lorde said\, “If I didn’t define myself for myself\, I would be crunched into other people’s fantasies for me and eaten alive.” This is the spirit of The Sisters Are Alright Weekend: A Celebration of the Black Femme Experience\, where participants see what happens when Black women have the freedom to identify their authentic selves–sharing joys\, fears and laughter–apart from demonizing stereotype. \nTwo events explore how Black women identify their authentic selves: \nOn Nov. 11\, a powerful roster of Black women\, including performers such as Kesha Dixon\, Celeste Williams\, and Tatjana Rebelle will take the main stage at The District Theatre for “Dear Black Girl Live II\,” reading frank\, honest and vulnerable letters about the joys and pains of Black girlhood from the book Dear Black Girl: Letters from Your Sisters on Stepping into Your Power by Tamara Winfrey-Harris. \nOn Nov. 12\, festivalgoers are invited to “Centering Sisters: Loud & Unapologetic” at the Madam Walker Legacy Center—a guaranteed raucous panel and audience discussion that tackles topics such as anger\, strength and sex. \nTo purchase tickets\, for “Dear Black Girl Live II\,” visit indydistricttheatre.com. For tickets to “Centering Sisters: Loud & Unapologetic\,” visit madamwalkerlegacycenter.com. \nA partnership between Centering Sisters\, The District Theatre\, and Madam Walker Legacy Center. \nContact the event organizers at 219-885-9023 or CenteringSisters@gmail.com.  \nWalk-ins welcome as seating allows\, but registration by Nov. 11 and/or 12 is encouraged. \nRegister below. \nImage Credit: Scott Weber

SUMMARY:(Un)Comfortable Conversations: The Power to Identify
DESCRIPTION:Hear from local writers\, poets\, and spoken word artists as they share brief and engaging stories of change centered around how they identify and how their sense of identity has shaped their lives and art. \nHow do the arts\, humanities\, and religion help identify the truth of who we are? How have identities changed over time? How does identifying with a group create unity? How does it create division? What does it mean to claim a new identity? How do the arts allow us to express our identities? \nWriters and spoken-word artists from diverse backgrounds will honestly and courageously tackle these questions and more during this event in which participants will also be given the opportunity to reflect on and write about similar themes. A Q&A will follow between the audience and presenters. \nA partnership between Word as Bond\, Inc. and \nA partnership between Word as Bond\, Inc. and the Department of English\, Humanities\, and World Languages at Ivy Tech Community College\, Indianapolis.\nContact event organizers at 317-940-9814 or amackjackson@wordasbond.org. \nThis is a hybrid event with in-person (Illinois Fall Creek Center\, Rm. 306) and online participation options. Walk-ins welcome\, but registration is strongly encouraged by Nov. 8. \nRegister below. (The single registration link will register you for both in-person and Zoom options!)

SUMMARY:Between Society and Self/Entre la Sociedad y uno Mismo
DESCRIPTION:What happens when you leave behind everything that created your sense of identity and start over? How do you explore and express those feelings? When words fail\, art steps in to help. Share in the stories of Christ Church Cathedral’s immigrant congregants through visual and performing arts. \nWhen leaving behind the touchstones of family and culture\, immigrants are challenged to forge a new identity in their adopted home\, blending past with present. Second generation immigrants who do not have the same connection to “home\,” must also bridge the expectations of older generations with the expectations of their new culture. \nUnderstandably\, this can be hard to articulate to someone unfamiliar with the experience. Art has a way of expressing thoughts and feelings that are hard to put into words. This gathering will showcase art and music created by Hispanic immigrants who call Christ Church Cathedral their spiritual home. \nThis event is bilingual\, presented in English and Spanish and features performing arts group Coro Latinoamericano among others. \nA partnership between Christ Church Cathedral\, Arte Mexicano de Indiana\, and LUNA Language Services. \nEvent organizer contact info: 317-636-4577 or info@cccindy.org. \nRegister below. \nCourtesy Elise Schrock\, Christ Church Cathedral\n

SUMMARY:Leave Them Something
DESCRIPTION:Explore the potential effects of climate chaos on our children’s future through writing\, dance\, and music inspired by the evocative artwork of Edith Vonnegut\, Kurt Vonnegut’s daughter. \nIf chaos is fast and uncontrollable change\, then how much longer do we have before “climate change” becomes “climate chaos?” This event combines the visual arts with literature\, music\, and dance to challenge the audience to think about what climate chaos will mean to future generations. \nA multi-layered interpretive event\, writers from the Indiana Writers Center will share original pieces inspired by Edith Vonnegut’s art. DK dancers will then share their choreographed responses to these writings for a deeply creative and immersive virtual gathering aimed at opening hearts and minds to the personal responsibilities we have in addressing climate change. \nA partnership between JCC Indianapolis\, Dance Kaleidoscope\, Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library\, and Indiana Writers Center. \nQuestions? Contact 317-432-3619 or lrothenberg@jccindy.org. \nThis event has changed from a hybrid to a virtual event. SUMMARY:Eternity 123
DESCRIPTION:Change is a central element to the avant-garde Japanese dance form of Butoh and dancer Vangeline presents original work that asks audiences to see Butoh as a way to transmute the pain and discord of societal shifts into art \nButoh is an avant-garde art form born during the height of the Japanese Counterculture Movement of the 1950s. Influenced by surrealism\, neo dada\, ballet\, and other dance forms\, Butoh “represents a shift from the conscious to the subconscious\, and each movement\, even when choreographed\, comes from within ….” \nThe Indianapolis Movement Arts Collective and Big Car eagerly invite the Indianapolis community to experience what might be an unfamiliar dance form that\, at its very core\, is about change. Butoh dancers morph into otherness\, their bodies taking on qualities of the natural world\, mythopoetic characters\, or surreal imagery. Butoh reveals “darkness” (that which is subconscious) as a transformative agent that is essential to growth and healing. \nA partnership between Indianapolis Movement Arts Collective and Big Car Collaborative. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Be Anxious for Nothing: Loss and Joy in Unexpected Change
DESCRIPTION:WATCH A RECORDING OF THIS EVENT HERE. \nWhat do the Bible\, Torah\, Qur’an\, and sacred music say about change? How do we hold space for grief and still find opportunities for joy and growth? We seek common experiences in different traditions through panel discussion and song. \nSacred texts in the Christian\, Jewish\, and Muslim traditions are collections of stories about the human experience and our interactions with the divine. These texts give many people hope that there are paths to navigating a “new normal” when unexpected and dramatic life changes occur. Sacred music adds an emotional component and deepens a feeling of connection to these stories and their lessons. \nThis event seeks out common experiences in different traditions through panel discussion and song. Music will be performed by members of the partner congregations and will be punctuated by brief readings from each faith tradition with a panel discussion at the end. \nSpeakers and musicians include Rabbi Brett Krichiver\, Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation; The Very Reverend Gray Lesesne\, Christ Church Cathedral; and Sr. Pastor Darian C. Bouie\, Progressive Baptist Church; and Imam Ismail Abdul-Aleem\, Masjid al-Mumineen. Moderated by the Right Reverend Bishop Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows\, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis. \nA partnership between Christ Church Cathedral\, Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation\, Progressive Baptist Church\, and Masjid al-Mumineen. \nQuestions? Contact 317-636-4577 or info@cccindy.org. \nThis event has both (limited seating) in-person and virtual participation options. Register by Nov. 8.
