SUMMARY:Be Anxious for Nothing: Loss and Joy in Unexpected Change
DESCRIPTION:WATCH A RECORDING OF THIS EVENT HERE. \nWhat do the Bible\, Torah\, Qur’an\, and sacred music say about change? How do we hold space for grief and still find opportunities for joy and growth? We seek common experiences in different traditions through panel discussion and song. \nSacred texts in the Christian\, Jewish\, and Muslim traditions are collections of stories about the human experience and our interactions with the divine. These texts give many people hope that there are paths to navigating a “new normal” when unexpected and dramatic life changes occur. Sacred music adds an emotional component and deepens a feeling of connection to these stories and their lessons. \nThis event seeks out common experiences in different traditions through panel discussion and song. Music will be performed by members of the partner congregations and will be punctuated by brief readings from each faith tradition with a panel discussion at the end. \nSpeakers and musicians include Rabbi Brett Krichiver\, Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation; The Very Reverend Gray Lesesne\, Christ Church Cathedral; and Sr. Pastor Darian C. Bouie\, Progressive Baptist Church; and Imam Ismail Abdul-Aleem\, Masjid al-Mumineen. Moderated by the Right Reverend Bishop Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows\, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis. \nA partnership between Christ Church Cathedral\, Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation\, Progressive Baptist Church\, and Masjid al-Mumineen. \nQuestions? Contact 317-636-4577 or info@cccindy.org. \nThis event has both (limited seating) in-person and virtual participation options. Register by Nov. 8. Please note the in-person event will adhere to prevailing local guidance on COVID-19. Thoroughly read confirmation details sent by the host. \n \nThis event is part of the Spirit & Place Festival. Click here to discover more festival events! \nSpirit & Place is a self-funded community initiative housed in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI.  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Eternity 123
DESCRIPTION:Change is a central element to the avant-garde Japanese dance form of Butoh and dancer Vangeline presents original work that asks audiences to see Butoh as a way to transmute the pain and discord of societal shifts into art \nButoh is an avant-garde art form born during the height of the Japanese Counterculture Movement of the 1950s. Influenced by surrealism\, neo dada\, ballet\, and other dance forms\, Butoh “represents a shift from the conscious to the subconscious\, and each movement\, even when choreographed\, comes from within ….” \nThe Indianapolis Movement Arts Collective and Big Car eagerly invite the Indianapolis community to experience what might be an unfamiliar dance form that\, at its very core\, is about change. Butoh dancers morph into otherness\, their bodies taking on qualities of the natural world\, mythopoetic characters\, or surreal imagery. Butoh reveals “darkness” (that which is subconscious) as a transformative agent that is essential to growth and healing. \nA partnership between Indianapolis Movement Arts Collective and Big Car Collaborative. \nQuestions? Contact 317-603-9330 or admin@indymovementarts.org. \nThese will be live\, in-person performances. Register by Nov. 12 & 13\, respectively. SUMMARY:Leave Them Something
DESCRIPTION:Explore the potential effects of climate chaos on our children’s future through writing\, dance\, and music inspired by the evocative artwork of Edith Vonnegut\, Kurt Vonnegut’s daughter. \nIf chaos is fast and uncontrollable change\, then how much longer do we have before “climate change” becomes “climate chaos?” This event combines the visual arts with literature\, music\, and dance to challenge the audience to think about what climate chaos will mean to future generations. \nA multi-layered interpretive event\, writers from the Indiana Writers Center will share original pieces inspired by Edith Vonnegut’s art. DK dancers will then share their choreographed responses to these writings for a deeply creative and immersive virtual gathering aimed at opening hearts and minds to the personal responsibilities we have in addressing climate change. \nA partnership between JCC Indianapolis\, Dance Kaleidoscope\, Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library\, and Indiana Writers Center. \nQuestions? Contact 317-432-3619 or lrothenberg@jccindy.org. \nThis event has changed from a hybrid to a virtual event. SUMMARY:Between Society and Self/Entre la Sociedad y uno Mismo
DESCRIPTION:What happens when you leave behind everything that created your sense of identity and start over? How do you explore and express those feelings? When words fail\, art steps in to help. Share in the stories of Christ Church Cathedral’s immigrant congregants through visual and performing arts. \nWhen leaving behind the touchstones of family and culture\, immigrants are challenged to forge a new identity in their adopted home\, blending past with present. Second generation immigrants who do not have the same connection to “home\,” must also bridge the expectations of older generations with the expectations of their new culture. \nUnderstandably\, this can be hard to articulate to someone unfamiliar with the experience. Art has a way of expressing thoughts and feelings that are hard to put into words. This gathering will showcase art and music created by Hispanic immigrants who call Christ Church Cathedral their spiritual home. \nThis event is bilingual\, presented in English and Spanish and features performing arts group Coro Latinoamericano among others. \nA partnership between Christ Church Cathedral\, Arte Mexicano de Indiana\, and LUNA Language Services. \nEvent organizer contact info: 317-636-4577 or info@cccindy.org. \nRegister below. \nCourtesy Elise Schrock\, Christ Church Cathedral\n

SUMMARY:(Un)Comfortable Conversations: The Power to Identify
DESCRIPTION:Hear from local writers\, poets\, and spoken word artists as they share brief and engaging stories of change centered around how they identify and how their sense of identity has shaped their lives and art. \nHow do the arts\, humanities\, and religion help identify the truth of who we are? How have identities changed over time? How does identifying with a group create unity? How does it create division? What does it mean to claim a new identity? How do the arts allow us to express our identities? \nWriters and spoken-word artists from diverse backgrounds will honestly and courageously tackle these questions and more during this event in which participants will also be given the opportunity to reflect on and write about similar themes. A Q&A will follow between the audience and presenters. \nA partnership between Word as Bond\, Inc. and \nA partnership between Word as Bond\, Inc. and the Department of English\, Humanities\, and World Languages at Ivy Tech Community College\, Indianapolis.\nContact event organizers at 317-940-9814 or amackjackson@wordasbond.org. \nThis is a hybrid event with in-person (Illinois Fall Creek Center\, Rm. 306) and online participation options. Walk-ins welcome\, but registration is strongly encouraged by Nov. 8. \nRegister below. (The single registration link will register you for both in-person and Zoom options!)

SUMMARY:The Sisters Are Alright Weekend: A Celebration of the Black Femme Experience - "Dear Black Girl"
DESCRIPTION:Through live letter readings and community discussion\, The Sisters Are Alright Weekend: A Celebration of the Black Femme Experience amplifies how Black women identify their true selves separate from poisoned narrative. Two gatherings\, two venues\, one awesome time! ($10 per person/per show.) \nFor centuries\, Black American women have been forced to reckon with negative stereotypes rooted in misogynoir. The indefatigable Mammy; the aggressive Sapphire; the wanton Jezebel; and thoughtlessly procreating Matriarch influence how Black women are seen by society and how they see themselves\, disconnecting them from authenticity. Activist Audre Lorde said\, “If I didn’t define myself for myself\, I would be crunched into other people’s fantasies for me and eaten alive.” This is the spirit of The Sisters Are Alright Weekend: A Celebration of the Black Femme Experience\, where participants see what happens when Black women have the freedom to identify their authentic selves–sharing joys\, fears and laughter–apart from demonizing stereotype. \nTwo events explore how Black women identify their authentic selves: \nOn Nov. 11\, a powerful roster of Black women\, including performers such as Kesha Dixon\, Celeste Williams\, and Tatjana Rebelle will take the main stage at The District Theatre for “Dear Black Girl Live II\,” reading frank\, honest and vulnerable letters about the joys and pains of Black girlhood from the book Dear Black Girl: Letters from Your Sisters on Stepping into Your Power by Tamara Winfrey-Harris. \nOn Nov. 12\, festivalgoers are invited to “Centering Sisters: Loud & Unapologetic” at the Madam Walker Legacy Center—a guaranteed raucous panel and audience discussion that tackles topics such as anger\, strength and sex. \nTo purchase tickets\, for “Dear Black Girl Live II\,” visit indydistricttheatre.com. For tickets to “Centering Sisters: Loud & Unapologetic\,” visit madamwalkerlegacycenter.com. \nA partnership between Centering Sisters\, The District Theatre\, and Madam Walker Legacy Center. \nContact the event organizers at 219-885-9023 or CenteringSisters@gmail.com.  \nWalk-ins welcome as seating allows\, but registration by Nov. 11 and/or 12 is encouraged. \nRegister below. \nImage Credit: Scott Weber

SUMMARY:The Testimony Service: I Made It. You Made It. We Made It\, Together
DESCRIPTION:The Testimony Service seeks to bring people together—regardless of faith affiliation—to fellowship and celebrate the good news about what’s going on in their lives and communities through music\, personal testimony and a shared meal. \nTo identify means to recognize the existence of a thing. This event\, which is rooted in the testimony tradition of the Black church\, invites the public to identify the ways they have experienced triumph in their lives. Using interactive writing activities followed by a live musical performance and storytelling from a group of community “testifiers\,” this event welcomes everyone to celebrate and share in life’s joys.   \nHear from pre-selected community testifiers (and then perhaps share your own story!)\, make art\, listen to music\, sit down to a community meal\, and join in fellowship with others who want to share what’s good in the world right now. Although rooted in a specific religious tradition\, this event eagerly welcomes all! \nA partnership between The Testimony Service and The Learning Tree. \nContact event organizers at 317-413-1239 or ebonychappel@gmail.com/ \nWalk-ins welcome\, but registration by Nov. 11 is strongly encouraged. \nRegister below.

SUMMARY:Water into Wine\, Bread into Cake: A Musical Feast. Music by Biber and Mozart
DESCRIPTION:Through classical music\, Colette Abel and The Abel Family Quartet share the story of two miracle children: Jesus and Mozart. Come to a musical smorgasbord sure to nourish your soul! \nThe concert will begin with Heinrich Biber’s Passacaglia for the Feast of the Guardian Angel followed by the Five Joyful Mystery Sonatas. Biber’s Mystery Sonatas are a musical depiction of Jesus’ life that follow the mysteries of the rosary. This important work also illustrates how the traditions of the Austrian baroque period nourished the musical evolution of the Viennese Classical style of which Mozart – something of a miraculous child\, himself – is famed. The second half of the concert will\, therefore\, feature Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante Sextet. Experience and celebrate the Joyful Mysteries & the miracle of Mozart! \nQuestions? Contact 317-635-2538 or admin@allsaintsindy.org. \nEvent Partners: A partnership between musician Colette Abel\, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra\, and Episcopal Church of All Saints. \nAudience Notes: Want to check out the concert program? SUMMARY:How to Eat with Tuning Forks
DESCRIPTION:Collectively create a soundscape by eating lunch in front of microphones\, banging on kitchen percussion\, and talking about the foods that nourish you. \nHere’s the deal: Bring your own lunch to the Garfield Park Arts Center\, but make sure it’s a meal that balances both your need for nourishment and convenience. You’ll then be invited to chew\, crunch\, munch\, gobble – you know\, eat! – in front of microphones while also considering what it is about this meal that nourishes you (however you define “nourish!”) and meets your need for convenience. A live musician playing ambient chords along with some “kitchen percussion” will play in the background with the sounds of eating\, story sharing\, and music blending together into a recorded soundscape. \nQuestions? Contact 317-345-0176 or clockworkmakesmusic@gmail.com. \nEvent Partners: Clockwork Music\, Arts with a Purpose\, and Garfield Park Arts Center. \nAudience Note: If you are not comfortable being in front of a microphone helping to make improvisational music\, tables and chairs will be set to the side … but we really encourage you to make some totally unique art with us! While this can be a come-and-go style event\, here’s what will be going on when: \n12 – Doors open\n12:15 – Introduction\, tutorial on reading a graphic score\n12: 20- Write your own Lunch Story\, talking with a neighbor is encouraged\n12:30(ish) – Lunch is self-served (bring your own!). Eat and create this soundscape together.\n1:30 – Mingling\n2:00 – Doors close \nEvent Registration: Registration requested by Nov. 11. Walk-ins welcome. \n \nImage/Logo Credit: Ankh Productions

SUMMARY:Balsa Wood\, a play by Lou Harry
DESCRIPTION:On the road away from rather than toward anything\, Robin finds refuge in the home of Carrie\, an iconoclast with an open heart and an open door\, who provides a place—without judgment—for human strays. An audience-inclusive discussion about unspoken gratitude will follow the performance. \nIntimately staged for a limited number of audience members at each performance\, Balsa Wood centers on characters struggling with their pasts and finding connection with those who\, on the surface\, are different from themselves. SUMMARY:The Cultural Construction of Gratitude
DESCRIPTION:While the act of gratitude is universal\, its expression is based on cultural norms. Our event invites you to learn about and explore how different cultures express gratitude through interactive vignettes and meaningful conversation. \n“Gratitude” seems simple enough\, but when you layer in different cultural interpretations\, it becomes far more nuanced than one might expect. A politeness learned from an early age in one cultural setting may be seen as rudeness in another. In three short vignettes\, audience members will experience scenes from different cultures illustrating various ways gratitude may be expressed. At one point the scene will freeze and a narrator will invite the audience into the scene\, first by asking what they saw then by engaging the various actors (who will remain in character) in dialogue. The audience will have an opportunity to experience how different communities view gratitude and its expression while building their own cultural competencies. \nQuestions?: Contact 317-531-6299 or gkelley@bez613.org. \nEvent Organizers: A partnership between Congregation Beth-El Zedeck\, IU Indianapolis Department of World Languages and Cultures\, and Alley Theatre Company. \nRegistration: Walk-in guests are welcome\, but registration is encouraged. SUMMARY:Heiliger Dankgesang: Notes of Gratitude. Music by Biber\, Clark\, Haydn\, and Beethoven
DESCRIPTION:Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra (ICO) musicians Alfred and Colette Abel will be joined by their children Benjamin and Clara for an afternoon of masterworks expressing gratitude through music. Join us in giving thanks for this sacred space\, transcendent music\, and life’s gifts. \nHeiliger Dankgesang: Notes of Thanks is an exploration of gratitude through music by the Abel Family Quartet. \nThe cornerstone of the program is Beethoven’s String Quartet op. 132\, of which the transcendent middle movement\, “Holy Hymn of Thanksgiving” stands as the heart of the work. Written in the final years of his life\, Beethoven grapples with his own mortality\, ultimately finding joy and gratitude for the gifts of life and the return to health after a life-threatening illness. Complimenting this\, the program will also include works by Biber\, Haydn’s “Emperor” variations\, and Richard Auldon Clark’s “Mabon.” \nQuestions? Contact 317-635-2538 or admin@allsaintsindy.org. \nEvent Organizers: A partnership between musician Colette Abel\, Episcopal Church of All Saints\, and Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. \nRegistration: Registration is encouraged. SUMMARY:Axolotl: The Regeneration of a Woman’s Heart
DESCRIPTION:ASL Interpretation provided by IU Indianapolis’s American Sign Language/English Interpreting Program students \nInspired by nature’s great regenerator—the Axolotl—this evening of original music and spoken word explores trauma\, healing\, and renewal through the lens of a woman’s heart. Join artist Tamra Rose and authors Eva Williams and Lacey Beatty for an intimate and hope-filled performance that invites us to reflect on nature’s wisdom and our own capacity to heal. \nExplore the nature of hope and healing through music\, literature\, and the axolotl. The axolotl is a salamander that never undergoes the typical metamorphosis into its terrestrial form\, remaining water-bound for life. Remarkably\, it can regenerate diseased or injured parts of its body—including limbs\, brain\, and heart. Seen through the lens of womanhood\, the axolotl becomes a metaphor for those who have endured trauma yet continue to survive and even flourish—blossoming into the fullness of who they were created to be. \nCounseling resources available. \nQuestions? Contact 317-509-5305 or booktamrarose@gmail.com. \nEvent Organizers: A partnership between Tamra Rose and My Sister’s Keeper. \nRegistration: Click here to register.
