SUMMARY:**Award of Awesomeness Nominee! ** Monarchs in a Changing World: How These Butterflies Bring Us Together
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS CURRENTLY OPERATING A WAITLIST. \nLearn about monarch butterflies and the importance of conservation while helping to complete a new mural! \nIs there a better metaphor for “change” than the metamorphosis from caterpillar to chrysalis and finally to butterfly? This mysterious transformation process has evoked awe for millennia. This event asks what wider transformation needs to happen for our world to remain hospitable to these magnificent creatures. \nUnder the guidance of mural artist Megan Jefferson\, attendees will help complete a 4-panel mural while learning about the monarch butterfly life cycle. Staff with the Central Indiana Land Trust and Indiana Wildlife Federation will share how we can all work together to conserve the monarch’s habitat – which in turn supports other plants and animals! Everyone gets to go home with milkweed seeds (the only food monarch larvae eat) to plant at home. \nA partnership between Central Indiana Land Trust\, Jefferson Art Studio\, and Indiana Wildlife Federation. \nQuestions? Contact 317-631-5263 or twillis@conservingindiana.org. \nWeather permitting\, this is an outdoor event and attendees are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather and paint-based activities. Space is limited and registration is required by Nov. 5. This event will adhere to prevailing local guidance on COVID-19. Thoroughly read confirmation details sent by the host. \n \nThis event is part of the Spirit & Place Festival. SUMMARY:**Award of Awesomeness Nominee!** Truthsgiving: Using Food to Dismantle a Colonial Myth
DESCRIPTION:Through cooking demonstrations and more\, explore why romanticized versions of Thanksgiving are harmful to Native Peoples and how you can incorporate indigenized alternatives into your celebration. \nNovember is Native American Heritage Month as well as the month many Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. The Eiteljorg and its partners invite you to explore ways of honoring Indigenous people during your holiday celebrations. The Native American community is widely diverse and still alive today. However\, systemic issues like the myth surrounding the origins of Thanksgiving continue to generalize and suppress the Native community. This event is not about cancelling a holiday; it is about changing perspectives on how to celebrate the holiday and Native Peoples. \nEnjoy a conversation about the mythology of the “first Thanksgiving” with Jonathan James-Perry (Aquinnah Wampanoag) and a cooking demonstration led by a Navajo food journalist Andi Murphy to learn more about food sovereignty. Attendees will be able to enter a drawing for a chance to win a meal kit with Indigenous foods and recipes\, so be sure to RSVP! \nA partnership between Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art\, Purdue Native American Educational Cultural Center\, and Indiana Native American Indian Affairs Commission. \nQuestions? Contact 317-275-1377 and museumprograms@eiteljorg.com. \nThis event is currently scheduled to occur in-person. Register by Nov. 9 and note this event will adhere to prevailing local guidance on COVID-19. Thoroughly read confirmation details sent by the host. \nImages courtesy of Andi Murphy (right) and Jonathan James Perry (left) \n \nThis event is part of the Spirit & Place Festival. SUMMARY:Powerful Conversations on Race (Nov.)
DESCRIPTION:Powerful Conversations on Race (PCR) is a monthly community dialogue series — with two tracks — exploring topics around race\, racism\, and the resulting impact. These sessions provide a means of getting comfortable talking about uncomfortable topics are are rooted in humanities- and art-based materials and sources. \nThis IS NOT a lecture or book club\, but rather a space for community to come together and dive deeply into a variety of topics concerning race. Active participation is expected. \nPCR 101 sessions are great starting place for those new to these kinds of dialogues and/or those wishing to more fully understand America’s complex racial history. Race & . . . sessions explore more contemporary issues are are designed for those who wish to continue past PCR 101. \nLearn more on the Powerful Conversations on Race main page. \nNovember’s sessions will focus on: \n\nPCR 101: Race\, Holidays\, and Dinner Discussions\nRace & . . .  Religion & White Supremacy (Inspired by this year’s Spirit & Place Festival Public Conversation with Robert Jones.)\n\n*For now\, PCR sessions are being conducted via Zoom. A camera check-in will be requested when you enter the space and since we share our computer screen to show images and text\, it is best to login from a laptop or tablet rather than a smartphone. Registration is managed through Eventbrite and the link is below. \nSpecial thanks to our partners Asante Art Institute of Indianapolis\, Community Action of Greater Indianapolis\, Indiana Humanities\, IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI\, Medical Humanities & Health Program @ IUPUI\, National Endowment of the Humanities\, Nicholas H. Noyes\, Jr.\, Memorial Foundation St. Paul’s Episcopal Church\, The Indianapolis Foundation\, a CICF affiliate and of course our community-based dialogue facilitators!
