SUMMARY:**Award of Awesomeness Nominee!** We Can Change the Past: Unearthing the History of Arab Indianapolis
DESCRIPTION:Watch the short film “When We Were Syrian: Early Lebanese in Indianapolis” here. \nWatch a debut performance of the film\, “When We Were Syrian: Early Lebanese in Indianapolis\,” and learn more about the forgotten past of Arab Indianapolis. \n“When We Were Syrian” is a deeply moving autobiographical short film that reveals a past overlooked in the dominant narrative of white\, Protestant\, Anglo-Saxon Indianapolis. The stories of these Arab ancestors and their contributions is a mirror through which we can recognize the truth: that we were (and are) a city of many peoples. That truth will lead us toward a deeper love of this place\, the city we all share. \nFilmmaker Josh Chitwood and historian Edward Curtis will introduce the film and then engage the audience in a Q&A session afterwards. \nA partnership between Arab Indianapolis\, Chitwood Media\, and Central Library. \nQuestions? Contact 317-278-1683 or ecurtis4@iupui.edu. \nThis event is currently scheduled to occur in-person. Register by Nov. 8 and note this event will adhere to prevailing local guidance on COVID-19. Thoroughly read confirmation details sent by the host. \nImage Courtesy of Chitwood Media \n \nThis event is part of the Spirit & Place Festival. SUMMARY:B-Movies and Bad History
DESCRIPTION:Good history doesn’t always make for good drama. Share your feelings about the best (and worst) portrayals of the past on screen through clips and conversation with our panel of local filmmakers and historians. \nWhat happens when Hollywood defines how we think about history? Can we create an historically accurate film without taking dramatic license? From exaggerations to complete fabrication\, our perceptions of the past are often changed by what we see on screen. Through clips and conversation\, this event will look at the good\, the bad\, and the ugly of historical cinema to understand how narratives are altered for artistic or dramatic effect. \nA partnership between Indiana Historical Society\, KanKan Cinema and Brasserie\, and the ACLU of Indiana. \nQuestions? Contact 317-690-2220 or hello@kankanindy.com \nThis event is currently scheduled to be in-person.
