SUMMARY:Eternity 123
DESCRIPTION:Change is a central element to the avant-garde Japanese dance form of Butoh and dancer Vangeline presents original work that asks audiences to see Butoh as a way to transmute the pain and discord of societal shifts into art \nButoh is an avant-garde art form born during the height of the Japanese Counterculture Movement of the 1950s. Influenced by surrealism\, neo dada\, ballet\, and other dance forms\, Butoh “represents a shift from the conscious to the subconscious\, and each movement\, even when choreographed\, comes from within ….” \nThe Indianapolis Movement Arts Collective and Big Car eagerly invite the Indianapolis community to experience what might be an unfamiliar dance form that\, at its very core\, is about change. Butoh dancers morph into otherness\, their bodies taking on qualities of the natural world\, mythopoetic characters\, or surreal imagery. Butoh reveals “darkness” (that which is subconscious) as a transformative agent that is essential to growth and healing. \nA partnership between Indianapolis Movement Arts Collective and Big Car Collaborative. \nQuestions? Contact 317-603-9330 or admin@indymovementarts.org. \nThese will be live\, in-person performances. Register by Nov. 12 & 13\, respectively. Please note this event will adhere to prevailing local guidance on COVID-19. SUMMARY:Changing Human Nature: Eugenics in Indiana
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive session\, IU professor Richard Gunderman takes us on a journey through the history of eugenics in Indiana and society’s misguided efforts to change human nature through science. \nEugenics may be defined as the effort to improve human life by controlling patterns of human reproduction—the idea that undesirable traits could be “bred out” of the human species and desirable traits “bred in.” So long as humans suppose that human biology equals human destiny\, the specter of eugenics will continue to lurk in the shadows of human history. \nLocated at the intersection of medicine\, history\, bioethics\, and science\, this event invites guests to learn more about the history of eugenics and then engage in small group conversations about the ethics of eugenics. \nA partnership between the Indiana Medical History Museum and Dr. Richard Gunderman\, Chancellor’s Professor of Radiology\, Pediatrics\, Medical Education\, Philosophy\, Liberal Arts\, Philanthropy\, and Medical Humanities and Health Studies at Indiana University. \nQuestions? Contact 317-635-7329 or shalter@imhm.org. \nThis event will be conducted via Zoom. Register by Nov. 12. \n \nThis event is part of the Spirit & Place Festival. SUMMARY:The Moral of Our Stories: Personal Ethics in the Work of Social Change
DESCRIPTION:Three local community activists—Phyllis Boyd\, Elizabeth Wallin\, and Andy Beck—talk with community member Martin Coleman about maintaining a moral vision when working for social change challenges the ideals motivating that very work. \nWhen our ideals lead us to unlikely alliances\, opportunities laden with unintended consequences\, or interpersonal conflict\, how does our understanding of our moral vision change? This event considers the dynamic and precarious interaction between individual integrity and working for social change. Assuming that individual ethical growth and social justice work cannot be separated\, panelists – and the audience – will be invited to reflect on how their personal integrity has been challenged by their social responsibilities. This event suggests that understanding what changes in ourselves when we work for social change can make our moral vision more inclusive and beneficial change more likely. \nA partnership between Homes for All Indy/Kheprw Institute\, Project Lia\, and Groundwork Indy. \nQuestions? Contact 317-409-1577 or martcole@iupui.edu. \nThis event is currently scheduled to occur in-person. Register by Nov. 10 and note this event will adhere to prevailing local guidance on COVID-19. SUMMARY:Oracles of Change: Interfaith Understanding through Art & Poetry
DESCRIPTION:WATCH A RECORDING OF THE EVENT BY CLICKING HERE. \nHear poems from Sikh and Muslim artists and reflect on how poetic imagery can be a meaningful tool in helping us make sense of societal change. \nIn 2020\, Franklin College hosted its first Interfaith Understanding through the Arts event during the Spirit & Place Festival. This year’s offering invites poets Sadiyah Bashir and Preeti Kaur Rajpal to share their work via livestream as a way to contemplate community change – even when that change results in violence and prejudice. Particularly considering the tragic FedEx shooting\, this event seeks to provide community members a way to engage and celebrate the growing diversity of Central Indiana through poetry as well as moderated conversations between readings. During these small group conversations\, audience members will be asked to think about how art and faith can help heal communities. \nA partnership between Franklin College\, Center for Interfaith Cooperation\, Johnson County Public Library\, Creative Council of Franklin\, Wild Geese Bookshop\, and SikhsPAC. \nQuestions? Contact 317-738-8140 or hadamsingram@franklincollege.edu. \nThis event is currently scheduled to occur in-person and online. Register by Nov. 11 to select your attendance option. SUMMARY:Psychedelic Medicine: CPR for the Soul?
DESCRIPTION:Watch a recording of this event here. \nGo on a journey into the mind to explore the possibility of relief of suffering and spiritual growth through psychedelic-assisted therapy. \nA universal change we all must face is death. For some\, anticipation of this change brings significant distress. New research shows that guided psychedelic-assisted therapy might ease this distress for some of those battling serious illness. Do psychedelics have the potential to change the way we look at ourselves\, our brains\, and our connections with others? Ongoing research may help us answer these questions\, but history also tells a tale of caution\, and this is not a therapy currently available outside the research setting. \nDr. Lou Lukas of the Heartland Palliadelic Research Center will talk about how psychedelics may create a new path for relieving suffering in people with serious illnesses like cancer before joining a panel conversation that invites the audience to dive into the history\, science\, and possible future of psychedelics. \nA partnership between Lyle Fettig\, MD\, a local palliative care physician; Lou Lukas\, MD of Heartland Palliadelic Research Center; and Norma Stevens\, MS\, LCPC\, a research therapist at Aquilino Cancer Center. \nQuestions? Contact 317-762-2052 or lyle.fettig.s.p@gmail.com. \nThis event be conducted via Zoom. SUMMARY:Introduction to Black Hue-manity 101: Imagining Blackness Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:The power of images is strong and enduring. Depictions of African peoples and blackness have changed over time and influence contemporary thinking and action. Since the Enlightenment\, Black humanity has been routinely attacked\, ridiculed\, and questioned\, and altogether denied. However\, this was not always the case. This multimedia exhibit featuring images\, video\, and historical testimony coupled with a presentation by Dr. Lasana Kazembe on writers and artists of the Early Classical period\, will foster conversation\, curiosity\, and an open exchange of knowledge on how imagery about Blackness has both changed over time and continues to occupy and animate our social and political imagination. Indianapolis poet Manon Voice will complement the exhibit with a poetic meditation that reflects the theme. A small reception will follow. \nDETAILS: \nNov. 8 – 11 – Exhibit opens to the public \n\nHours for self-guided tour – 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.\n\nNov. 10 – Live lecture & artistic presentation \n\nexhibit: 5:00 p.m.—8:00 p.m.\nlecture: 6:00 p.m.—7:00 p.m.\nreception: 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.\n\nLearn more by clicking the REGISTER button below where you will be redirected to Eventbrite. \nA partnership between Dr. Lasana D. SUMMARY:Climate Change and American Religion: Resetting the Agenda
DESCRIPTION:TO WATCH A RECORDING OF THIS EVENT\, CLICK HERE. \nTO LISTEN TO A FOLLOW-UP INTERVIEW ON WFYI’S “ALL IN\,” CLICK HERE. \nClimate change is real\, and the danger is urgent. Can religion contribute to meaningful change\, or are the main solutions political? Join Peter Thuesen\, author of Tornado God\, as we discuss one of the biggest challenges of our time. \nThroughout U.S. history\, religion – particularly Christianity – has inspired radical change in some and passivity in others. The prophetic tradition in Hebrew scripture\, for example\, has called some Americans to radical responsibility\, whereas apocalyptic texts in the same Bible have led other Americans to conclude some events are beyond our control. Peter Thuesen will challenge attendees to consider these conflicting impulses and whether they can be marshaled in creative new ways to address climate change. Following Thuesen’s lecture\, participants will gather in small Zoom breakout rooms to discuss the question\, “Does religion have a role to play in combatting climate change\, and if so\, what should that role be?” \nIn partnership with Peter Thuesen and the IUPUI Senior Academy. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:B-Movies and Bad History
DESCRIPTION:Good history doesn’t always make for good drama. Share your feelings about the best (and worst) portrayals of the past on screen through clips and conversation with our panel of local filmmakers and historians. \nWhat happens when Hollywood defines how we think about history? Can we create an historically accurate film without taking dramatic license? From exaggerations to complete fabrication\, our perceptions of the past are often changed by what we see on screen. Through clips and conversation\, this event will look at the good\, the bad\, and the ugly of historical cinema to understand how narratives are altered for artistic or dramatic effect. \nA partnership between Indiana Historical Society\, KanKan Cinema and Brasserie\, and the ACLU of Indiana. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:**Award of Awesomeness Nominee!** Truthsgiving: Using Food to Dismantle a Colonial Myth
DESCRIPTION:Through cooking demonstrations and more\, explore why romanticized versions of Thanksgiving are harmful to Native Peoples and how you can incorporate indigenized alternatives into your celebration. \nNovember is Native American Heritage Month as well as the month many Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. The Eiteljorg and its partners invite you to explore ways of honoring Indigenous people during your holiday celebrations. The Native American community is widely diverse and still alive today. However\, systemic issues like the myth surrounding the origins of Thanksgiving continue to generalize and suppress the Native community. This event is not about cancelling a holiday; it is about changing perspectives on how to celebrate the holiday and Native Peoples. \nEnjoy a conversation about the mythology of the “first Thanksgiving” with Jonathan James-Perry (Aquinnah Wampanoag) and a cooking demonstration led by a Navajo food journalist Andi Murphy to learn more about food sovereignty. Attendees will be able to enter a drawing for a chance to win a meal kit with Indigenous foods and recipes\, so be sure to RSVP! \nA partnership between Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art\, Purdue Native American Educational Cultural Center\, and Indiana Native American Indian Affairs Commission. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Be Anxious for Nothing: Loss and Joy in Unexpected Change
DESCRIPTION:WATCH A RECORDING OF THIS EVENT HERE. \nWhat do the Bible\, Torah\, Qur’an\, and sacred music say about change? How do we hold space for grief and still find opportunities for joy and growth? We seek common experiences in different traditions through panel discussion and song. \nSacred texts in the Christian\, Jewish\, and Muslim traditions are collections of stories about the human experience and our interactions with the divine. These texts give many people hope that there are paths to navigating a “new normal” when unexpected and dramatic life changes occur. Sacred music adds an emotional component and deepens a feeling of connection to these stories and their lessons. \nThis event seeks out common experiences in different traditions through panel discussion and song. Music will be performed by members of the partner congregations and will be punctuated by brief readings from each faith tradition with a panel discussion at the end. \nSpeakers and musicians include Rabbi Brett Krichiver\, Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation; The Very Reverend Gray Lesesne\, Christ Church Cathedral; and Sr. Pastor Darian C. Bouie\, Progressive Baptist Church; and Imam Ismail Abdul-Aleem\, Masjid al-Mumineen. Moderated by the Right Reverend Bishop Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows\, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis. \nA partnership between Christ Church Cathedral\, Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation\, Progressive Baptist Church\, and Masjid al-Mumineen. \nQuestions? Contact 317-636-4577 or info@cccindy.org. \nThis event has both (limited seating) in-person and virtual participation options. Register by Nov. 8. SUMMARY:**Award of Awesomeness Nominee!** We Can Change the Past: Unearthing the History of Arab Indianapolis
DESCRIPTION:Watch the short film “When We Were Syrian: Early Lebanese in Indianapolis” here. \nWatch a debut performance of the film\, “When We Were Syrian: Early Lebanese in Indianapolis\,” and learn more about the forgotten past of Arab Indianapolis. \n“When We Were Syrian” is a deeply moving autobiographical short film that reveals a past overlooked in the dominant narrative of white\, Protestant\, Anglo-Saxon Indianapolis. The stories of these Arab ancestors and their contributions is a mirror through which we can recognize the truth: that we were (and are) a city of many peoples. That truth will lead us toward a deeper love of this place\, the city we all share. \nFilmmaker Josh Chitwood and historian Edward Curtis will introduce the film and then engage the audience in a Q&A session afterwards. \nA partnership between Arab Indianapolis\, Chitwood Media\, and Central Library. \nQuestions? Hear from spoken word artists\, writers\, and community leaders on what it means to wrestle with and accept the consequences of change. \nNew and profound communal bonds are often formed as we grow into an embrace our true identities. Yet this process of change and self-acceptance can often break older bonds and challenge tradition. Reflect on the words of spoken word artists whose religious\, racial\, sexual\, and gender identities have created new bonds and broken others. In what ways has personal change strengthened their sense of identity and community while disrupting tradition? Are some of these divides worth bridging? Or letting go? What new community values are revealed as we embrace change and how might art uplift stories of positive change? \nA partnership between Ivy Tech Community College Library—Indianapolis and Word as Bond\, Inc. \nQuestions? Contact 440-384-7612 and amackjackson@wordasbond.org. \nThis event be conducted via Zoom. Register by Nov. 8. \nPhoto Credit: Word as Bond\, Inc. \n \nThis event is part of the Spirit & Place Festival. SUMMARY:Changing Direction: Adopting Trauma-Informed Care in Indiana State Hospitals
DESCRIPTION:RE-SCHEDULED DUE TO ILLNESS. REGISTER FOR THE JANUARY 11\, 2022 VIRTUAL EVENT HERE. \nLook at the historic therapeutic care used in the state’s psychiatric hospitals and compare this care to the newly integrated trauma-informed care model to see how much has changed. \nThe Indiana Medical History Museum (IMHM) has been a careful guardian of the history of psychiatric care at Central State Hospital (1848—1994) since its founding in 1969. This event is a chance to expand that historical knowledge to include similar hospitals around the state and highlight present-day innovations. \nFollowing two short presentations – one by a medical historian and the other by a hospital director – attendees will get to listen in on a discussion with a patient advocate on the significance of these changes. Attendees are encouraged to visit the IMHM website to learn about tour opportunities to see the related exhibit Changing Direction: The Evolution of Treatment at Indiana’s State Psychiatric Hospitals. \nA partnership between Indiana Medical History Museum\, Indiana State Psychiatric Hospital Network\, and Mental Health America of Indiana. \nQuestions? Contact 317-635-7329 or nerickson@imhm.org \nThis event to be conducted via Zoom. Register by Nov. 6. \n \nThis event is part of the Spirit & Place Festival. SUMMARY:**Award of Awesomeness Nominee! ** Monarchs in a Changing World: How These Butterflies Bring Us Together
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS CURRENTLY OPERATING A WAITLIST. \nLearn about monarch butterflies and the importance of conservation while helping to complete a new mural! \nIs there a better metaphor for “change” than the metamorphosis from caterpillar to chrysalis and finally to butterfly? This mysterious transformation process has evoked awe for millennia. This event asks what wider transformation needs to happen for our world to remain hospitable to these magnificent creatures. \nUnder the guidance of mural artist Megan Jefferson\, attendees will help complete a 4-panel mural while learning about the monarch butterfly life cycle. Staff with the Central Indiana Land Trust and Indiana Wildlife Federation will share how we can all work together to conserve the monarch’s habitat – which in turn supports other plants and animals! Everyone gets to go home with milkweed seeds (the only food monarch larvae eat) to plant at home. \nA partnership between Central Indiana Land Trust\, Jefferson Art Studio\, and Indiana Wildlife Federation. \nQuestions? Contact 317-631-5263 or twillis@conservingindiana.org. \nWeather permitting\, this is an outdoor event and attendees are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather and paint-based activities. Space is limited and registration is required by Nov. 5. This event will adhere to prevailing local guidance on COVID-19. Thoroughly read confirmation details sent by the host. \n \nThis event is part of the Spirit & Place Festival.
