SUMMARY:Tearing Down Boxes and Embracing Change
DESCRIPTION:Fiber artists from two guilds unite to create an art exhibit that breaks us out of our boxes and embraces change!  Learn more in a Trail Talk session with fiber artists and actors who have portrayed artists dealing with change\, as they discuss art as a vehicle for healing and growth. \nTo broaden ourselves we often need to break out of our boxes – religion affiliations\, circle of friends\, social groups\, etc. Doing so means making an intentional choice to enter uncomfortable or challenging spaces to affect or experience change. Artists from INFiber and Akomo Ntoso have partnered across guilds to share ideas and expose each other to new points of view\, techniques\, and ways of doing. Their work will be displayed for the public to interpret and during a Trail Talk session at the Phoenix Theater\, fiber artists and actors with the production Alabaster will join in conversation to discuss art as a tool for healing\, growth\, and change. \nDoors open at 5:30pm to view the exhibit with a panel discussion occurring from 6:30-8pm. \nVisit the exhibit from Nov. 4 through Dec. 23 (Tues. – Fri.\, 1-4pm) at the Phoenix Theatre Cultural Center. \nA partnership between INFiber\, Akoma Ntoso Modern Quilt Guild of Central Indiana\, and Phoenix Theatre Cultural Center. \nQuestions? Contact 317-690-3851 or acoconnell@comcast.net. \nThis event is currently scheduled to occur in-person. Register for the Trail Talk session by Nov. 4 and note this event will adhere to prevailing local guidance on COVID-19. Thoroughly read confirmation details sent by the host. \nImage Credit: Montika Allen-Atkinson \n \nThis event is part of the Spirit & Place Festival. SUMMARY:Introduction to Black Hue-manity 101: Imagining Blackness Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:The power of images is strong and enduring. Depictions of African peoples and blackness have changed over time and influence contemporary thinking and action. Since the Enlightenment\, Black humanity has been routinely attacked\, ridiculed\, and questioned\, and altogether denied. However\, this was not always the case. This multimedia exhibit featuring images\, video\, and historical testimony coupled with a presentation by Dr. Lasana Kazembe on writers and artists of the Early Classical period\, will foster conversation\, curiosity\, and an open exchange of knowledge on how imagery about Blackness has both changed over time and continues to occupy and animate our social and political imagination. Indianapolis poet Manon Voice will complement the exhibit with a poetic meditation that reflects the theme. A small reception will follow. \nDETAILS: \nNov. 8 – 11 – Exhibit opens to the public \n\nHours for self-guided tour – 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.\n\nNov. 10 – Live lecture & artistic presentation \n\nexhibit: 5:00 p.m.—8:00 p.m.\nlecture: 6:00 p.m.—7:00 p.m.\nreception: 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.\n\nLearn more by clicking the REGISTER button below where you will be redirected to Eventbrite. \nA partnership between Dr. Lasana D. Kazembe of the IU School of Education at IUPUI and IUPUI Herron School of Art + Design. \nQuestions? Contact 317-278-1108 or lkazembe@iu.edu. \nThis event is currently scheduled to be in-person. Register by Nov. 10 and note this event will adhere to prevailing local guidance on COVID-19. Thoroughly read confirmation details sent by the host. \n \nThis event is part of the Spirit & Place Festival.
