DESCRIPTION:The Nov. 5 performance at 4pm will have live captioning to a screen.\nThe Nov. 7 performance at 7pm will has ASL interpretation.\nAll other accommodation requests should be made by Oct. 20. \nMany of us don’t know what to say or do when a loved one experiences profound grief. Through live theatrical enactments and original music\, audiences are invited to practice reacting to loss and supporting those they love. \nOur brains are wired for survival\, not loss\, creating significant challenges in the aftermath of profound grief. FACING GRIEF\, a presentation of The Sapphire Theatre’s award-winning PICTURE THIS® applied theatre programming\, engages improvisational actors to act out brief scenarios. Staying in character\, they “break the fourth wall” for an interactive talk back with the audience at the crisis point of each scene. Society and the community can do better for those who are hurting. Theatre can help show the way by allowing participants to practice how to have hard conversations\, hold space\, and listen. Musicians\, interfaith ministers\, educators\, counselors and other subject matter experts will help facilitate this event. \nFACING GRIEF will also be performed twice on November 5 at Unity Indianapolis. The 11:30am performance will follow a specially-themed worship service (10am) that all are welcome to attend! A second performance is scheduled for 4pm. FACING GRIEF is also being performed on on November 3 at the Phoenix Theatre. DESCRIPTION:View a screening of The Pendleton 2: They Stood Up\, a groundbreaking new documentary that tells the story of political prisoners John “Balagoon” Cole and Christopher “Naeem” Trotter\, the leaders of the 1985 Indiana prison uprising that saved a man’s life. Directed by Too Black and TheKingTrill. \nThough thousands live inside prisons in Indiana\, their stories rarely make it out. This event seeks to foster bonds of understanding between those inside and outside of prison by exploring the events of 1985 – which were a reaction to a lack of nourishment. Those incarcerated in Pendleton Correctional Facility were being denied food\, comfort\, safety\, and intellectual care. Their uprising was in direct response to a multifaceted starvation of mind\, body\, and spirit. DESCRIPTION:ASL Upon Request. \nExplore the root differences between eastern and western philosophies\, practices\, and traditions related to the idea of “nourishment” for the body and soul in this interactive lecture complete with finger exercises! \nWhen in dialogue with each other\, differences between Eastern and Western philosophies can be more clearly understood\, but so can similarities and avenues of deeper exploration and appreciation. This event– which includes interactive elements even for virtual attendees! – invites you to explore the ways in which Eastern and Western thought envision and put into practice ideas around “nourishment.” For example\, Eastern traditions such as Taoism\, Buddhism\, and traditional Chinese medicines think of humans as integrated with nature – the body is its own small cosmos. In the historic Western tradition\, humans are separated from nature just as the mind is separate from the body. How do these philosophies and practices shape our world today? How can understanding these differences build appreciation for new ways of thinking and doing? DESCRIPTION:Powerful Conversations on Race (PCR) is a monthly community dialogue series — with two tracks — exploring topics around race\, racism\, and the resulting impact. These sessions provide a means of getting comfortable talking about uncomfortable topics are are rooted in humanities- and art-based materials and sources. \nThis IS NOT a lecture or book club\, but rather a space for community to come together and dive deeply into a variety of topics concerning race. Active participation is expected. \nPCR 101 sessions are great starting place for those new to these kinds of dialogues and/or those wishing to more fully understand America’s complex racial history. DESCRIPTION:In this interactive session\, IU professor Richard Gunderman takes us on a journey through the history of eugenics in Indiana and society’s misguided efforts to change human nature through science. \nEugenics may be defined as the effort to improve human life by controlling patterns of human reproduction—the idea that undesirable traits could be “bred out” of the human species and desirable traits “bred in.” So long as humans suppose that human biology equals human destiny\, the specter of eugenics will continue to lurk in the shadows of human history. \nLocated at the intersection of medicine\, history\, bioethics\, and science\, this event invites guests to learn more about the history of eugenics and then engage in small group conversations about the ethics of eugenics. \nA partnership between the Indiana Medical History Museum and Dr. Richard Gunderman\, Chancellor’s Professor of Radiology\, Pediatrics\, Medical Education\, Philosophy\, Liberal Arts\, Philanthropy\, and Medical Humanities and Health Studies at Indiana University. \nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:Watch the short film “When We Were Syrian: Early Lebanese in Indianapolis” here. \nWatch a debut performance of the film\, “When We Were Syrian: Early Lebanese in Indianapolis\,” and learn more about the forgotten past of Arab Indianapolis. \n“When We Were Syrian” is a deeply moving autobiographical short film that reveals a past overlooked in the dominant narrative of white\, Protestant\, Anglo-Saxon Indianapolis. The stories of these Arab ancestors and their contributions is a mirror through which we can recognize the truth: that we were (and are) a city of many peoples. That truth will lead us toward a deeper love of this place\, the city we all share. \nFilmmaker Josh Chitwood and historian Edward Curtis will introduce the film and then engage the audience in a Q&A session afterwards. \nA partnership between Arab Indianapolis\, Chitwood Media\, and Central Library. \nQuestions? Hear from spoken word artists\, writers\, and community leaders on what it means to wrestle with and accept the consequences of change. \nNew and profound communal bonds are often formed as we grow into an embrace our true identities. Yet this process of change and self-acceptance can often break older bonds and challenge tradition. Reflect on the words of spoken word artists whose religious\, racial\, sexual\, and gender identities have created new bonds and broken others. In what ways has personal change strengthened their sense of identity and community while disrupting tradition? Are some of these divides worth bridging? Or letting go? DESCRIPTION:Seating for the in-person discussion on Nov. 6 has reached capacity.  \nPlease register to participate in the discussion virtually and/or sign-up for a time to tour the exhibit on a different day. \nExhibit and community conversation to record\, elevate\, and archive the histories of memory keepers who have lived\, worked\, and played in Twin Aire neighborhoods for generations. Bilingual event (English/Spanish). \nMemory Keepers features one gallery located in Twin Aire featuring portraits and recorded interviews of community “memory keepers” from the Twin Aire Neighborhood Coalition Neighborhoods. Portraits were painted and interviews conducted by artist Kaila Austin. These small and often overlooked neighborhoods are filled with people of diverse backgrounds – Black\, Hispanic/Latinx\, White\, old\, young\, immigrant – and all have stories to tell about the changes in neighborhood through the years. \nExperience these stories through the exhibit at 201 Studios\, online archive including portraits\, recordings\, and artifacts located on the TANC page of the SEND website\, or a community conversation with featured memory keepers and artist Kaila Austin on Nov. 6 from 4:30-5:30pm.
