SUMMARY:Cultural Compost: Nourishing Places in the Footprints of Toxic History
DESCRIPTION:ASL Upon Request by Oct. 27. \nFrom the water that we drink to the air that we breathe\, we all have experience with the legacies of environmental damage. This hands-on workshop will help you develop personal stories related to places of environmental harm and then use those stories to nourish the ongoing work of environmental justice. \nCommunity members are invited to share stories of experience with environmental damage (including social and physical harm from industrial waste\, climate change\, pollution\, etc.) and then transform those stories into deeper knowledge\, empathy\, and tools for change. The goal of this workshop is to increase awareness of both common threats and ongoing efforts to create a healthier city\, as well as to gather stories from diverse perspectives that will be included in a forthcoming exhibit hosted at Indy Parks sites in 2024. The stories shared and refined during this workshop will add to a broader understanding (and study) of the city’s toxic heritage and will help ensure that lived experience is part of how we document the history and legacy of toxic environments. Out of decay can come new\, nourishing life. This workshop plows the contaminated soil of the city to grow new understanding and empathy\, and to motivate people to act for a cleaner\, healthier\, sustainable\, and more just future. \nQuestions? Contact 317-327-7161 or Kavita.mahoney@indy.gov \nEvent Partners: IU School of Liberal Arts Museum Studies Program at IUPUI and Indy Parks and Recreation. \nEvent Registration: Registration requested by Nov. 9. Walk-ins welcome as space permits. \n \nImage Credit: IUPUI Museum Studies Program

SUMMARY:Nourish: Testimonies about Food\, Family\, and Love (Day 2: Testimony Service)
DESCRIPTION:A two-day celebration focused on the healing powers of food\, community\, and spirituality featuring films\, food\, and testimonies from Black femme creators. \nThe gathering will take attendees on an immersive visual\, sensual\, auditory\, and spiritual experience in the spirit of honoring how Black femmes have nourished themselves and one another while making an indelible impact on the world. On Friday\, Nov. 10\, two films – “In Our Mother’s Gardens” and “Food as Resistance” will be shown. Dinner will be served in between screenings and a discussion about the ways lineage\, love\, and (unjust) food systems intersect will close the night. \nThe following day (Nov. 11) will feature music\, storytelling\, and the culinary arts in a Testimony Service for all! (Think: Moth Radio Hour.) Testimony services have their roots in the Black church tradition as a time where people can take to the altar and tell a story or sing a song that illustrates a triumphant moment in their lives. Attendees will be given writing prompts for their own reflections and will hear from a selection of Black femme speakers before enjoying refreshments. \nDoors open at 4pm with programming beginning at 5pm. \nAudience Note: While this event is open to people from all faiths or non-faith backgrounds\, Black Christian traditions as well as African ancestral practices will be honored. \nQuestions? Contact 317-413-1239 or TheTestimonyServiceOnline@gmail.com. \nEvent Partners: The Testimony Service and The Center for Religion\, Arts\, and Culture. \nEvent Registration: Registration requested by Nov. 3\, but walk-in guests are welcome. \n \nImage Courtesy of The Testimony Service

SUMMARY:Spirit & Place Common Read: A Thousand Thanks by A.J. Jacobs
DESCRIPTION:Join Spirit & Place this year as we embark on an exploration of the festival’s GRATITUDE theme through a series of book discussions. \nOur first gathering will occur on Tuesday\, Feb. 6 from 6:30 to 7:30pm (EST) via Zoom. We will discuss the Thanks a Thousand: A Gratitude Journey by A.J. Jacobs. \nBOOK SUMMARY:\nAuthor A.J. Jacobs discovers that his coffee—and every other item in our lives—would not be possible without hundreds of people we usually take for granted: farmers\, chemists\, artists\, presidents\, truckers\, mechanics\, biologists\, miners\, smugglers\, and goatherds. \nBy thanking these people face to face\, Jacobs finds some much-needed brightness in his life. Gratitude does not come naturally to Jacobs—his disposition is more Larry David than Tom Hanks—but he sets off on the journey on a dare from his son. And by the end\, it’s clear to him that scientific research on gratitude is true. Gratitude’s benefits are legion: It improves compassion\, heals your body\, and helps battle depression. \nWHERE TO FIND:\nIndianapolis Public Library \nAmazon (from $2 – $15 depending on quality & format) \nZOOM DETAILS:\nYou will be emailed a Zoom link upon registering. Registration begins on January 11 and will close at 12noon on February 6. The waiting room will be enabled and\, to avoid disruption\, guests arriving after 6:40pm will not be admitted.

SUMMARY:Spirit & Place Common Read: Here For It\, or\, How to Save Your Soul in America by R. Eric Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Join with Spirit & Place on an exploration of the festival’s GRATITUDE theme through a series of book discussions. \nOur next gathering will occur IN PERSON on Tuesday\, August 13 from 6 – 7PM at the College Ave. Library (4180 N. College Ave.). We will discuss Here For It\, or\, How to Save Your Soul in America by R. Eric Thomas. \nThis is a book club-style discussion\, not an author appearance.  \nBOOK SUMMARY:\nR. Eric Thomas didn’t know he was different until the world told him so. Everywhere he went–whether it was his rich\, mostly white\, suburban high school\, his conservative black church\, or his Ivy League college in a big city–he found himself on the outside looking in. \nIn essays by turns hysterical and heartfelt\, Eric redefines what it means to be an “other” through the lens of his own life experience. He explores the two worlds of his childhood: the barren urban landscape where his parents’ house was an anomalous bright spot\, and the verdant school they sent him to in white suburbia. He writes about struggling to reconcile his Christian identity with his sexuality\, about the exhaustion of code-switching in college\, accidentally getting famous on the internet (for the wrong reason)\, and the surreal experience of covering the 2016 election as well as the seismic change that came thereafter. Ultimately\, Eric seeks the answer to the ever more relevant question: Is the future worth it? Why do we bother when everything seems to be getting worse? As the world continues to shift in unpredictable ways\, Eric finds the answers to these questions by re-envisioning what “normal” means\, and in the powerful alchemy that occurs when you at last place yourself at the center of your own story. \nWHERE TO FIND:\nIndianapolis Public Library (eBook\, Book\, & Audio) \nLocal Books Stores! Curious about how to keep conversations open instead of shutting them down? You’ll walk away with a tool designed exactly for “important\, complicated issues that can divide people.”\nFor in-person guests: Arrive early at 5:30PM for heavy hors d’oeuvres\, live viola music by Colette Abel\, and a chance to mingle with our event partners before Katharine takes the virtual stage at 6PM. And don’t leave right after the talk—you’ll miss one of the evening’s most engaging experiences! Krista Longtin\, IU communication expert and winner of Spirit & Place’s 2019 Award of Awesomeness (“A Faith Leader and a Scientist Walk into a Bar”)\, will lead a fun improv-based workshop that will get you laughing\, connecting\, and reflecting on how to ask questions from genuine curiosity. You’ll practice communication skills that help build bridges and common ground\, something we all need more of.
