SUMMARY:Powerful Conversations on Race
DESCRIPTION:Powerful Conversations on Race [PCR] is a monthly community dialogue series exploring topics around race and racism and the resulting impact. \nPowerful Conversations on Race is a way for us to get comfortable talking about uncomfortable histories and is\, therefore\, rooted in historical documents and subject matter. \nThis IS NOT a lecture or book club\, but a space for community to come together and dive deeply into a variety of topics concerning race. This is an immersive experience. As such\, we’ll spend a considerable amount of time in small groups to dialogue with each other about these topics. \nThis dialogue is virtual and occur on Eastern Standard Time / Eastern Daylight Time. \nFebruary’s gathering will celebrate local hero Major Taylor by diving into historical documents and photographs to understand the racial environment that shaped his legacy. After the dialogue\, attendees are encouraged to learn more about Taylor’s life by attending the film screening of Major Taylor: Champion of the Race at the Indiana State Museum. Learn more here. \nRegistration ends at 12 noon day of event and you will receive a Zoom link after registering by using the blue button/web link below.

SUMMARY:Spirit & Place Common Read: Here For It\, or\, How to Save Your Soul in America by R. Eric Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Join with Spirit & Place on an exploration of the festival’s GRATITUDE theme through a series of book discussions. \nOur next gathering will occur IN PERSON on Tuesday\, August 13 from 6 – 7PM at the College Ave. Library (4180 N. College Ave.). We will discuss Here For It\, or\, How to Save Your Soul in America by R. Eric Thomas. \nThis is a book club-style discussion\, not an author appearance.  \nBOOK SUMMARY:\nR. Eric Thomas didn’t know he was different until the world told him so. Everywhere he went–whether it was his rich\, mostly white\, suburban high school\, his conservative black church\, or his Ivy League college in a big city–he found himself on the outside looking in. \nIn essays by turns hysterical and heartfelt\, Eric redefines what it means to be an “other” through the lens of his own life experience. He explores the two worlds of his childhood: the barren urban landscape where his parents’ house was an anomalous bright spot\, and the verdant school they sent him to in white suburbia. He writes about struggling to reconcile his Christian identity with his sexuality\, about the exhaustion of code-switching in college\, accidentally getting famous on the internet (for the wrong reason)\, and the surreal experience of covering the 2016 election as well as the seismic change that came thereafter. Ultimately\, Eric seeks the answer to the ever more relevant question: Is the future worth it? Why do we bother when everything seems to be getting worse? As the world continues to shift in unpredictable ways\, Eric finds the answers to these questions by re-envisioning what “normal” means\, and in the powerful alchemy that occurs when you at last place yourself at the center of your own story. \nWHERE TO FIND:\nIndianapolis Public Library (eBook\, Book\, & Audio) \nLocal Books Stores! Call and see what is in stock.  \nAmazon (Used\, New\, & Kindle from $8-$19) \nREGISTER HERE or use the blue button/weblink below.

SUMMARY:Youth Rising for Nature: Getting Community in Action through Service & Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Community Forum & River Clean Up. Attend one or both gatherings. \nJoin Sea Scope’s youth Eco-Warriors for a two-part event exploring environmental justice\, community dialogue\, and a Fall Creek cleanup. Facilitated by local experts and inspired by Laudato Si\, this experience blends spiritual reflection and action. Connect with neighbors of Martindale-Brightwood and our living earth—come for one or both days! \nThis two-part experience (attending both Saturdays is optional) connects storytelling\, faith\, Martindale-Brightwood neighbors\, and environmental action. The first session features an expert and youth-led community forum exploring local ecological challenges and reflections inspired by Laudato Si’ – a 2015 papal encyclical focused on environmental stewardship\, climate change\, and ecological responsibility\, emphasizing the moral and spiritual dimensions of caring for the Earth. A week later\, participants engage in a hands-on cleanup along Fall Creek restoring natural spaces in disinvested communities while learning how local actions connect to global environmental issues. Through dialogue\, reflection\, and collective action\, attendees will deepen their understanding of stewardship\, equity\, and the sacred responsibility to care for our shared planet. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:The Nature of Belief: How Translation of Sacred Text Decides Meaning
DESCRIPTION:Translation is never neutral\, and it shapes more than words. In fact\, it shapes the very nature of belief. Compare different English translations of sacred texts in small groups and how they have influenced understanding and belief across time\, cultures\, and communities. Participants will be challenged to rethink the meaning of well-known verses and how different meanings can reconstruct our thoughts. \nThrough small-group conversations\, participants will explore how translations of sacred texts shape meaning and influence cultural understanding. Beginning with a brief introduction and examples of shifting translations over time\, the event invites guests to compare different versions of ancient writings used across faith communities. By treating sacred texts as both poetry and philosophy\, participants will consider how language\, art\, and interpretation influence belief\, and how translation itself shapes the very nature of religious understanding. \nQuestions? Contact 317-531-6299 or gkelley@bez613.org. \nEvent Organizers: A partnership between Congregation Beth-El Zedeck\, Northminster Presbyterian Church\, and JCC Indianapolis’s Ann Katz Festival of Books. \nRegistration: Click here to register. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Fear\, Mercy\, and the Nature of Us
DESCRIPTION:Limited capacity. Registration encouraged. \nInspired by the poems Allowables by Nikki Giovanni and Mercy by Rudy Francisco this event explores the roots of our fears and the quiet\, transformative power of mercy. Facilitated by Deborah Asante\, participants will engage in guided writing\, creative reflection\, and optional group sharing in a safe and supportive environment. \nThrough the power of poetry and writing\, this event examines and explores how the nature of fear and mercy shape us as individuals and a society. Engage in guided conversation about how we respond to what we do not understand. Write short reflections\, letters\, or poems and contribute a word or phrase to a collaborative community art piece called the Web of Mercy. Set in a calm and creative space\, the program offers time for meaningful dialogue\, quiet reflection\, and artistic expression\, leaving participants with a deeper sense of how the sacred choice of mercy can shape both our inner lives and our relationships with others. \nQuestions?
