SUMMARY:Powerful Conversations on Race (June 2023)
DESCRIPTION:Powerful Conversations on Race [PCR] is a monthly community dialogue series exploring topics around race and racism and the resulting impact. \nPowerful Conversations on Race is a way for us to get comfortable talking about uncomfortable histories and is\, therefore\, rooted in historical documents and subject matter. \nThis IS NOT a lecture or book club\, but a space for community to come together and dive deeply into a variety of topics concerning race. This is an immersive experience. As such\, we’ll spend a considerable amount of time in small groups to dialogue with each other about these topics. \nFor the June 2023 dialogue\, we will focus on a TBD historical topic and this will be a HYBRID event. Both in-person and virtual attendance will be possible\, but we ask you to stick to whatever format you sign up for. \nAll dialogues are virtual and occur on Eastern Standard Time / Eastern Daylight Time. \nRegistration ends at 12noon on the day of the event. A Zoom link will be sent prior to the event date. \nRegister below.

SUMMARY:Civic Saturday: The Reflective Citizen
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be a reflective citizen? A person who knows the value of showing up for others and who does so in a spirit of open-mindedness\, responsibility\, and whole-heartedness? We’ll explore these habits of citizenship while building community by sharing poetry\, songs\, and civic fellowship together. \nCivic Saturday is a civic analogue to a faith gathering. It’s a gathering of friends and strangers in a common place to nurture a spirit of shared purpose. But it’s not about a particular faith tradition nor is it trying to replace faith. It’s about the shared societal values that should work to unite us — liberty\, equality\, freedom\, and self-government — even if we argue how to achieve these ideals! \nJoin with others to sing\, hear poetry\, share civic readings\, listen to a civic sermon about being a “Reflective Citizen”\, while also building community connections through small group dialogue. \nABOUT CIVIC SATURDAYS: The Civic Saturday model was pioneered by Seattle-based Citizen University in 2016 and strives to be a “great democratic self-cure.” In a time of deep political divide\, we must create new approaches to fostering a shared sense of moral and civic purpose. In a country held together not by race or religion\, but by a common creed\, how do we maintain a sense of national cohesion? How do we create values-based fellowship? How do we convert that creed and those values into useful action? Civic Saturday seeks to answer these questions\, and many more.

SUMMARY:Nourishing Democracy: Healthy IPS School Board Elections
DESCRIPTION:Constitutional republics must be nourished to stay viable. As school board elections offer a microcosm of democracy\, what does IPS board history teach us about the democratic process and what citizens can do to nurture their own sense of civic empowerment? \nOnce regulated to the May Primary\, Indianapolis school board elections are now large and expensive early November events. Debate from a plurality of perspectives is needed for a healthy democracy and a vigorous public education system. So is an understanding of local history. In the early 1920s\, little to no competition existed in school board races which were ostensibly run by the Citizens School Committee. This is the era that deeply segregated and segmented Indianapolis’s public schools into a caste system. As recent media stories have shown\, modern school board elections are being inundated with outside money – and agendas – that threaten to shape public schools in ways the community may not want. Using primary sources and recent news articles\, attendees will be divided into working groups to compare and contrast the past to the present in an effort to plan for the future. Visual arts\, poetry\, and music will further help attendees appreciate the challenges democracy faces while inspiring them to stay engaged and active. \nQuestions? Contact 317-998-1339 or johnharrisloflin@yahoo.com. \nAudience Notes: Doors open at 6pm for guests to interact with the exhibits. Programming begins at 7pm. \nEvent Partners: Charles E. Loflin & Virginia P. Vornehm-Loflin Center on IPS History\, the Black & Latino Policy Institute\, Virgil and Sheila Boyd\, Wyse Ra\, Rev. Dr. Thomas L. Brown\, and artists Dr. Monday\, Clyde Gaw\, and Clockwork Janz. \nEvent Registration: Registration requested by Nov. 9. Walk-ins welcome!

SUMMARY:Cultural Compost: Nourishing Places in the Footprints of Toxic History
DESCRIPTION:ASL Upon Request by Oct. 27. \nFrom the water that we drink to the air that we breathe\, we all have experience with the legacies of environmental damage. This hands-on workshop will help you develop personal stories related to places of environmental harm and then use those stories to nourish the ongoing work of environmental justice. \nCommunity members are invited to share stories of experience with environmental damage (including social and physical harm from industrial waste\, climate change\, pollution\, etc.) and then transform those stories into deeper knowledge\, empathy\, and tools for change. The goal of this workshop is to increase awareness of both common threats and ongoing efforts to create a healthier city\, as well as to gather stories from diverse perspectives that will be included in a forthcoming exhibit hosted at Indy Parks sites in 2024. The stories shared and refined during this workshop will add to a broader understanding (and study) of the city’s toxic heritage and will help ensure that lived experience is part of how we document the history and legacy of toxic environments. Out of decay can come new\, nourishing life. This workshop plows the contaminated soil of the city to grow new understanding and empathy\, and to motivate people to act for a cleaner\, healthier\, sustainable\, and more just future. \nQuestions? Contact 317-327-7161 or Kavita.mahoney@indy.gov \nEvent Partners: IU School of Liberal Arts Museum Studies Program at IUPUI and Indy Parks and Recreation. \nEvent Registration: Registration requested by Nov. 9. SUMMARY:Spirit & Place Common Read: A Thousand Thanks by A.J. Jacobs
DESCRIPTION:Join Spirit & Place this year as we embark on an exploration of the festival’s GRATITUDE theme through a series of book discussions. \nOur first gathering will occur on Tuesday\, Feb. 6 from 6:30 to 7:30pm (EST) via Zoom. We will discuss the Thanks a Thousand: A Gratitude Journey by A.J. Jacobs. \nBOOK SUMMARY:\nAuthor A.J. Jacobs discovers that his coffee—and every other item in our lives—would not be possible without hundreds of people we usually take for granted: farmers\, chemists\, artists\, presidents\, truckers\, mechanics\, biologists\, miners\, smugglers\, and goatherds. \nBy thanking these people face to face\, Jacobs finds some much-needed brightness in his life. Gratitude does not come naturally to Jacobs—his disposition is more Larry David than Tom Hanks—but he sets off on the journey on a dare from his son. And by the end\, it’s clear to him that scientific research on gratitude is true. Gratitude’s benefits are legion: It improves compassion\, heals your body\, and helps battle depression. \nWHERE TO FIND:\nIndianapolis Public Library \nAmazon (from $2 – $15 depending on quality & format) \nZOOM DETAILS:\nYou will be emailed a Zoom link upon registering. Registration begins on January 11 and will close at 12noon on February 6. The waiting room will be enabled and\, to avoid disruption\, guests arriving after 6:40pm will not be admitted.

SUMMARY:Spirit & Place Common Read: Here For It\, or\, How to Save Your Soul in America by R. Eric Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Join with Spirit & Place on an exploration of the festival’s GRATITUDE theme through a series of book discussions. \nOur next gathering will occur IN PERSON on Tuesday\, August 13 from 6 – 7PM at the College Ave. Library (4180 N. College Ave.). We will discuss Here For It\, or\, How to Save Your Soul in America by R. Eric Thomas. \nThis is a book club-style discussion\, not an author appearance.  \nBOOK SUMMARY:\nR. Eric Thomas didn’t know he was different until the world told him so. Everywhere he went–whether it was his rich\, mostly white\, suburban high school\, his conservative black church\, or his Ivy League college in a big city–he found himself on the outside looking in. \nIn essays by turns hysterical and heartfelt\, Eric redefines what it means to be an “other” through the lens of his own life experience. He explores the two worlds of his childhood: the barren urban landscape where his parents’ house was an anomalous bright spot\, and the verdant school they sent him to in white suburbia. He writes about struggling to reconcile his Christian identity with his sexuality\, about the exhaustion of code-switching in college\, accidentally getting famous on the internet (for the wrong reason)\, and the surreal experience of covering the 2016 election as well as the seismic change that came thereafter. Ultimately\, Eric seeks the answer to the ever more relevant question: Is the future worth it? Why do we bother when everything seems to be getting worse? As the world continues to shift in unpredictable ways\, Eric finds the answers to these questions by re-envisioning what “normal” means\, and in the powerful alchemy that occurs when you at last place yourself at the center of your own story. \nWHERE TO FIND:\nIndianapolis Public Library (eBook\, Book\, & Audio) \nLocal Books Stores!
