SUMMARY:Civic Saturday: The Reflective Citizen
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be a reflective citizen? A person who knows the value of showing up for others and who does so in a spirit of open-mindedness\, responsibility\, and whole-heartedness? We’ll explore these habits of citizenship while building community by sharing poetry\, songs\, and civic fellowship together. \nCivic Saturday is a civic analogue to a faith gathering. It’s a gathering of friends and strangers in a common place to nurture a spirit of shared purpose. But it’s not about a particular faith tradition nor is it trying to replace faith. In a country held together not by race or religion\, but by a common creed\, how do we maintain a sense of national cohesion? How do we create values-based fellowship? Through live theatrical enactments of various scenarios\, audiences are invited to practice reacting to loss and supporting those they love. \nOur brains are wired for survival\, not loss\, creating significant challenges in the aftermath of profound grief. FACING GRIEF\, a presentation of The Sapphire Theatre’s award-winning PICTURE THIS® applied theatre programming\, engages improvisational actors to act out brief scenarios. Staying in character\, they “break the fourth wall” for an interactive talk back with the audience at the crisis point of each scene. Society and the community can do better for those who are hurting. Theatre can help show the way by allowing participants to practice how to have hard conversations\, hold space\, and listen. SUMMARY:Nourishing Democracy: Healthy IPS School Board Elections
DESCRIPTION:Constitutional republics must be nourished to stay viable. As school board elections offer a microcosm of democracy\, what does IPS board history teach us about the democratic process and what citizens can do to nurture their own sense of civic empowerment? \nOnce regulated to the May Primary\, Indianapolis school board elections are now large and expensive early November events. Debate from a plurality of perspectives is needed for a healthy democracy and a vigorous public education system. So is an understanding of local history. In the early 1920s\, little to no competition existed in school board races which were ostensibly run by the Citizens School Committee. This is the era that deeply segregated and segmented Indianapolis’s public schools into a caste system. As recent media stories have shown\, modern school board elections are being inundated with outside money – and agendas – that threaten to shape public schools in ways the community may not want. Using primary sources and recent news articles\, attendees will be divided into working groups to compare and contrast the past to the present in an effort to plan for the future. Visual arts\, poetry\, and music will further help attendees appreciate the challenges democracy faces while inspiring them to stay engaged and active. \nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:ASL Upon Request by Oct. 27. \nFrom the water that we drink to the air that we breathe\, we all have experience with the legacies of environmental damage. This hands-on workshop will help you develop personal stories related to places of environmental harm and then use those stories to nourish the ongoing work of environmental justice. \nCommunity members are invited to share stories of experience with environmental damage (including social and physical harm from industrial waste\, climate change\, pollution\, etc.) and then transform those stories into deeper knowledge\, empathy\, and tools for change. The goal of this workshop is to increase awareness of both common threats and ongoing efforts to create a healthier city\, as well as to gather stories from diverse perspectives that will be included in a forthcoming exhibit hosted at Indy Parks sites in 2024. The stories shared and refined during this workshop will add to a broader understanding (and study) of the city’s toxic heritage and will help ensure that lived experience is part of how we document the history and legacy of toxic environments. DESCRIPTION:Join Spirit & Place this year as we embark on an exploration of the festival’s GRATITUDE theme through a series of book discussions. \nOur first gathering will occur on Tuesday\, Feb. 6 from 6:30 to 7:30pm (EST) via Zoom. We will discuss the Thanks a Thousand: A Gratitude Journey by A.J. Jacobs. \nBOOK SUMMARY:\nAuthor A.J. Jacobs discovers that his coffee—and every other item in our lives—would not be possible without hundreds of people we usually take for granted: farmers\, chemists\, artists\, presidents\, truckers\, mechanics\, biologists\, miners\, smugglers\, and goatherds. \nBy thanking these people face to face\, Jacobs finds some much-needed brightness in his life. Gratitude does not come naturally to Jacobs—his disposition is more Larry David than Tom Hanks—but he sets off on the journey on a dare from his son. And by the end\, it’s clear to him that scientific research on gratitude is true. DESCRIPTION:Powerful Conversations on Race [PCR] is a monthly community dialogue series exploring topics around race and racism and the resulting impact. \nPowerful Conversations on Race is a way for us to get comfortable talking about uncomfortable histories and is\, therefore\, rooted in historical documents and subject matter. \nThis IS NOT a lecture or book club\, but a space for community to come together and dive deeply into a variety of topics concerning race. This is an immersive experience. As such\, we’ll spend a considerable amount of time in small groups to dialogue with each other about these topics. \nThis dialogue is virtual and occur on Eastern Standard Time / Eastern Daylight Time. \nFebruary’s gathering will celebrate local hero Major Taylor by diving into historical documents and photographs to understand the racial environment that shaped his legacy.
