Both the exhibit and panel discussion will invite the public to envision a more equitable future for the site. \nThe exhibit – with interactive virtual reality programming! – opens at 6pm on Nov. 5 with the panel discussion occurring from 7-8pm. \nThe exhibit will run from Nov. 5-17 and available for viewing from 10am-5pm\, Tuesday through Saturday. \nA partnership between Garfield Park Arts Center\, University Library—IUPUI\, and students at IU School of Liberal Arts Museum Studies Program at IUPUI\, and Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:**Award of Awesomeness Nominee! ** Monarchs in a Changing World: How These Butterflies Bring Us Together
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS CURRENTLY OPERATING A WAITLIST. \nLearn about monarch butterflies and the importance of conservation while helping to complete a new mural! \nIs there a better metaphor for “change” than the metamorphosis from caterpillar to chrysalis and finally to butterfly? This mysterious transformation process has evoked awe for millennia. This event asks what wider transformation needs to happen for our world to remain hospitable to these magnificent creatures. \nUnder the guidance of mural artist Megan Jefferson\, attendees will help complete a 4-panel mural while learning about the monarch butterfly life cycle. Staff with the Central Indiana Land Trust and Indiana Wildlife Federation will share how we can all work together to conserve the monarch’s habitat – which in turn supports other plants and animals! Everyone gets to go home with milkweed seeds (the only food monarch larvae eat) to plant at home. \nA partnership between Central Indiana Land Trust\, Jefferson Art Studio\, and Indiana Wildlife Federation. \nQuestions? Contact 317-631-5263 or twillis@conservingindiana.org. \nWeather permitting\, this is an outdoor event and attendees are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather and paint-based activities. Space is limited and registration is required by Nov. 5. This event will adhere to prevailing local guidance on COVID-19. Thoroughly read confirmation details sent by the host. \n \nThis event is part of the Spirit & Place Festival. Click here to discover more festival events! \nSpirit & Place is a self-funded community initiative housed in the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI.  \n

SUMMARY:**Award of Awesomeness Nominee!** We Can Change the Past: Unearthing the History of Arab Indianapolis
DESCRIPTION:Watch the short film “When We Were Syrian: Early Lebanese in Indianapolis” here. \nWatch a debut performance of the film\, “When We Were Syrian: Early Lebanese in Indianapolis\,” and learn more about the forgotten past of Arab Indianapolis. \n“When We Were Syrian” is a deeply moving autobiographical short film that reveals a past overlooked in the dominant narrative of white\, Protestant\, Anglo-Saxon Indianapolis. The stories of these Arab ancestors and their contributions is a mirror through which we can recognize the truth: that we were (and are) a city of many peoples. That truth will lead us toward a deeper love of this place\, the city we all share. \nFilmmaker Josh Chitwood and historian Edward Curtis will introduce the film and then engage the audience in a Q&A session afterwards. \nA partnership between Arab Indianapolis\, Chitwood Media\, and Central Library. \nQuestions? Contact 317-278-1683 or ecurtis4@iupui.edu. \nThis event is currently scheduled to occur in-person. Register by Nov. 8 and note this event will adhere to prevailing local guidance on COVID-19. SUMMARY:**Award of Awesomeness Nominee!** Truthsgiving: Using Food to Dismantle a Colonial Myth
DESCRIPTION:Through cooking demonstrations and more\, explore why romanticized versions of Thanksgiving are harmful to Native Peoples and how you can incorporate indigenized alternatives into your celebration. \nNovember is Native American Heritage Month as well as the month many Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. The Eiteljorg and its partners invite you to explore ways of honoring Indigenous people during your holiday celebrations. The Native American community is widely diverse and still alive today. However\, systemic issues like the myth surrounding the origins of Thanksgiving continue to generalize and suppress the Native community. This event is not about cancelling a holiday; it is about changing perspectives on how to celebrate the holiday and Native Peoples. \nEnjoy a conversation about the mythology of the “first Thanksgiving” with Jonathan James-Perry (Aquinnah Wampanoag) and a cooking demonstration led by a Navajo food journalist Andi Murphy to learn more about food sovereignty. Attendees will be able to enter a drawing for a chance to win a meal kit with Indigenous foods and recipes\, so be sure to RSVP! \nA partnership between Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art\, Purdue Native American Educational Cultural Center\, and Indiana Native American Indian Affairs Commission. \nQuestions? Contact 317-275-1377 and museumprograms@eiteljorg.com. \nThis event is currently scheduled to occur in-person. Register by Nov. 9 and note this event will adhere to prevailing local guidance on COVID-19. Thoroughly read confirmation details sent by the host. \nImages courtesy of Andi Murphy (right) and Jonathan James Perry (left) \n \nThis event is part of the Spirit & Place Festival. SUMMARY:Jadzia\, My Beloved Old Friend! Gender Representation in Science Fiction
DESCRIPTION:As with many political and socially sensitive topics\, SciFi has long created a safe space to fully explore one’s identity. Hear from SciFi fans who have explored – and embraced – their gender and sexual identities through the art and power of science fiction. \nThis inclusive and welcoming event features a moderated discussion with SciFi fans who have a nontraditional experience with their own gender identity or sexual orientation. They will explore inspirational models they’ve encountered in SciFi stories and how these models have affected their own journeys. A wider discussion will also examine some of the ways SciFi has represented gender\, romance\, and sexual orientation through film\, writing\, and even fannish gatherings (e.g.\, cosplay) and how these spaces of imagination create accepting environments that encourage a full exploration of one’s identity. \nA partnership between Starbase Indy\, Gender Nexus\, and Center for Inquiry. \nContact the event organizers at 317-626-2163 or Lisa_meece@starbaseindy.org.  \nWalk-ins welcome\, but registration is strongly encouraged by Nov. 6.  \nRegister below.

SUMMARY:Inking Identity: Indigenous Tattoo Practices
DESCRIPTION:Artist\, activist\, and owner/founder of Thunderbird Rising Studios in Indianapolis\, Stephanie Big Eagle will talk about the traditional Indigenous practice of hand poked tattooing and how both the practice of tattooing and the tattoo itself shape and reflect cultural identity. \nTattoos are inherently tied to identity as one is choosing to permanently adorn their body with visual aspects of their self. Like many Native art forms\, oppression and assimilation practices led traditional tattooing practices to be set aside for a time. Fortunately\, these tattooing traditions are experiencing a reawakening and revival in recent years\, helping Native Peoples connect deeply to cultural practices that were nearly lost. \nThose gathered for the event will have a chance to hear Lakota/Dakota tattoo artist Stephanie Big Eagle and others talk about the practice of hand poked tattooing and how Indigenous tattoos both shape and reflect individual and cultural identities. \nA partnership between Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art\, Purdue University Native American Educational and Cultural Center\, and Indiana Native American Indian Affairs Commission. \nContact the event organizers at (317) 275-1377 or museumprograms@eiteljorg.com. \nWalk-ins welcome\, but registration is strongly encouraged by Nov. 9. \nThis event will also be livestreamed via Vimeo.  \nRegister below. \nThe second group includes people with innate disabilities. We try to rectify what nature Carly Rae Jepsen has deprived us of. And the third group includes patients who should be discouraged. They hope that after plastic surgery problems in the family or at work will disappear\, or they will have good luck in the love life. These people don’t realize that the reasons are within themselves and not in their appearance. Sometimes just talking is enough to make the patient realize that there is no need for surgery\, because they just need to solve their psychological problems. \nImage courtesy of Stephanie Big Eagle

SUMMARY:The Sisters Are Alright Weekend: A Celebration of the Black Femme Experience - "Dear Black Girl"
DESCRIPTION:Through live letter readings and community discussion\, The Sisters Are Alright Weekend: A Celebration of the Black Femme Experience amplifies how Black women identify their true selves separate from poisoned narrative. Two gatherings\, two venues\, one awesome time! ($10 per person/per show.) \nFor centuries\, Black American women have been forced to reckon with negative stereotypes rooted in misogynoir. The indefatigable Mammy; the aggressive Sapphire; the wanton Jezebel; and thoughtlessly procreating Matriarch influence how Black women are seen by society and how they see themselves\, disconnecting them from authenticity. Activist Audre Lorde said\, “If I didn’t define myself for myself\, I would be crunched into other people’s fantasies for me and eaten alive.” This is the spirit of The Sisters Are Alright Weekend: A Celebration of the Black Femme Experience\, where participants see what happens when Black women have the freedom to identify their authentic selves–sharing joys\, fears and laughter–apart from demonizing stereotype. \nTwo events explore how Black women identify their authentic selves: \nOn Nov. 11\, a powerful roster of Black women\, including performers such as Kesha Dixon\, Celeste Williams\, and Tatjana Rebelle will take the main stage at The District Theatre for “Dear Black Girl Live II\,” reading frank\, honest and vulnerable letters about the joys and pains of Black girlhood from the book Dear Black Girl: Letters from Your Sisters on Stepping into Your Power by Tamara Winfrey-Harris. \nOn Nov. 12\, festivalgoers are invited to “Centering Sisters: Loud & Unapologetic” at the Madam Walker Legacy Center—a guaranteed raucous panel and audience discussion that tackles topics such as anger\, strength and sex. \nTo purchase tickets\, for “Dear Black Girl Live II\,” visit indydistricttheatre.com. For tickets to “Centering Sisters: Loud & Unapologetic\,” visit madamwalkerlegacycenter.com. \nA partnership between Centering Sisters\, The District Theatre\, and Madam Walker Legacy Center. \nContact the event organizers at 219-885-9023 or CenteringSisters@gmail.com.  \nWalk-ins welcome as seating allows\, but registration by Nov. 11 and/or 12 is encouraged. \nRegister below. \nImage Credit: Scott Weber

SUMMARY:The Testimony Service: I Made It. You Made It. We Made It\, Together
DESCRIPTION:The Testimony Service seeks to bring people together—regardless of faith affiliation—to fellowship and celebrate the good news about what’s going on in their lives and communities through music\, personal testimony and a shared meal. \nTo identify means to recognize the existence of a thing. This event\, which is rooted in the testimony tradition of the Black church\, invites the public to identify the ways they have experienced triumph in their lives. Using interactive writing activities followed by a live musical performance and storytelling from a group of community “testifiers\,” this event welcomes everyone to celebrate and share in life’s joys.   \nHear from pre-selected community testifiers (and then perhaps share your own story!)\, make art\, listen to music\, sit down to a community meal\, and join in fellowship with others who want to share what’s good in the world right now. Although rooted in a specific religious tradition\, this event eagerly welcomes all! \nA partnership between The Testimony Service and The Learning Tree. \nContact event organizers at 317-413-1239 or ebonychappel@gmail.com/ \nWalk-ins welcome\, but registration by Nov. 11 is strongly encouraged. \nRegister below.

DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT.\nASL Upon Request. \nPrepare lunch with a group of strangers and eat it together\, all in silence. Afterwards\, reflect\, via facilitated mindful dialogue\, on your communal experience and what it means to nourish and be nourished. \nSilent practice is a cornerstone of Zen Buddhism. At its heart\, Zen meditation practice is returning to ease in the body and ease in breathing\, allowing one to turn towards whatever they are experiencing. Participants will experience the effects of living this way for a short time and then reflect on their experience through a facilitated mindful dialogue at the end of the meal. In this way\, we hope participants will have the opportunity to explore what it means to nourish and be nourished on many levels\, beyond words and concepts\, through the collective experience of making a meal and consuming it together in perfect silence. \nQuestions? Contact 317-296-4540 or hello@indycommunityyoga.org \nEvent Partners: Indy Community Yoga\, The Indianapolis Zen Center\, and Indy’s Kitchen. \nEvent Registration: Registration required by Oct. 20.  Due to the nature of this event\, we cannot accommodate walk-in guests. \nAudience Note: After an orientation to silent practice and kitchen safety (overseen by professional kitchen staff)\, participants will prepare\, consume\, and clean up together in silence. Food allergies/sensitivities or accommodations needed to participate in the meal preparation should be communicated the organizers in the registration form. \nDonations: Donations are not expected but are warmly accepted to help us cover the costs of fresh ingredients\, facility rental\, and the labor of a professional kitchen staff person. Those costs evenly divided amongst participants amount to $30 per person. Thank you for any level of support and your sincere participation in Delicious Silence.

SUMMARY:Nourish: Testimonies about Food\, Family\, and Love (Day 1: Film Screening)
DESCRIPTION:A two-day celebration focused on the healing powers of food\, community\, and spirituality featuring films\, food\, and testimonies from Black femme creators. \nThe gathering will take attendees on an immersive visual\, sensual\, auditory\, and spiritual experience in the spirit of honoring how Black femmes have nourished themselves and one another while making an indelible impact on the world. \nOn Friday\, Nov. 10\, two films – “In Our Mother’s Gardens” and “Food as Resistance” will be shown. Dinner will be served in between screenings and a discussion about the ways lineage\, love\, and (unjust) food systems intersect will close the night. \nThe following day (Nov. 11) will feature music\, storytelling\, and the culinary arts in a Testimony Service for all! (Think: Moth Radio Hour.) Testimony services have their roots in the Black church tradition as a time where people can take to the altar and tell a story or sing a song that illustrates a triumphant moment in their lives. Attendees will be given writing prompts for their own reflections and will hear from a selection of Black femme speakers before enjoying refreshments. \nDoors open at 4pm each day for guests to congregate with each other. Programming begins at 5pm. \nAudience Note: While this event is open to people from all faiths or non-faith backgrounds\, Black Christian traditions as well as African ancestral practices will be honored. \nQuestions? Please contact317-413-1239 or TheTestimonyServiceOnline@gmail.com \nEvent Partners: The Testimony Service and The Center for Religion\, Arts\, and Culture. \nEvent Registration: Registration requested by Nov.3\, but walk-in guests are welcome! \n \nImage Courtesy of The Testimony Service

SUMMARY:How to Eat with Tuning Forks
DESCRIPTION:Collectively create a soundscape by eating lunch in front of microphones\, banging on kitchen percussion\, and talking about the foods that nourish you. \nHere’s the deal: Bring your own lunch to the Garfield Park Arts Center\, but make sure it’s a meal that balances both your need for nourishment and convenience. You’ll then be invited to chew\, crunch\, munch\, gobble – you know\, eat! – in front of microphones while also considering what it is about this meal that nourishes you (however you define “nourish!”) and meets your need for convenience. A live musician playing ambient chords along with some “kitchen percussion” will play in the background with the sounds of eating\, story sharing\, and music blending together into a recorded soundscape. \nQuestions? Contact 317-345-0176 or clockworkmakesmusic@gmail.com. \nEvent Partners: Clockwork Music\, Arts with a Purpose\, and Garfield Park Arts Center. \nAudience Note: If you are not comfortable being in front of a microphone helping to make improvisational music\, tables and chairs will be set to the side … but we really encourage you to make some totally unique art with us! While this can be a come-and-go style event\, here’s what will be going on when: \n12 – Doors open\n12:15 – Introduction\, tutorial on reading a graphic score\n12: 20- Write your own Lunch Story\, talking with a neighbor is encouraged\n12:30(ish) – Lunch is self-served (bring your own!). Eat and create this soundscape together.\n1:30 – Mingling\n2:00 – Doors close \nEvent Registration: Registration requested by Nov. 11. Walk-ins welcome. \n \nImage/Logo Credit: Ankh Productions

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing to Nourish the Mind\, Body\, & Soul
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT. Please contact event organizers to inquire about a waitlist.\n \nASL Upon Request by Oct. 27.  \nEnjoy a 60-minute guided walk through Crown Hill Cemetery’s Arboretum that will nourish an appreciation for the benefits of nature. \n“Forest bathing” promotes interaction between humans and wooded spaces\, which is deeply needed in a culture that too often sees nature as a commodity to be bought\, sold\, transformed\, and used. Studies have shown the health benefits of being in nature – it can lower blood pressure\, calm heart rates\, and reduce levels of harmful hormones all while helping individuals form stronger connections to their communities. Led by a guide certified by the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and Programs\, this event invites you to listen to nature\, savor the sounds and smells of the outdoors\, and be mindful of the ways nature can nourish the mind\, body\, and soul. \nQuestions? Contact 317-920-2644 or jrdinius@crownhill.org. \nEvent Partners: Crown Hill Heritage Foundation\, Indiana DNR—Division of Forestry\, and Wanderwood Studio. \nEvent Registration: Due limited space\, registration is required. Walk-in guests cannot be accommodated.
